"Parables of Jesus for Faithful Stewards, Part 4: The Measure of the Faithful Steward"

Meeting House2023
WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday we conclude our 4-part Sermon Series called “Parables of Jesus for Faithful Stewards.” In this series, we are reflecting on Jesus’ parables and commands to help us love God, our SSPC faith family, and our neighbors outside.

This Sunday we focus on Jesus’ Great Commandment to love God with all our being and to love our neighbor as ourself.  On this Commitment / Reformation Sunday, we pledge our time, talent and treasure to fulfill Christ’s Great Commandment. Generations have made this same thing commitment right here in this very place. Generations before that have made the same commitment in far-flung places before coming here to worship in freedom, in the manner that they believed to be authentic and faithful to God.

Now it is our turn. How does it feel to be the continuation of that legacy of hundreds of years and dozens of generations of faithful stewardship? As we do our best to live up to the Biblical standard of the stewardship of all of life which Christ set for us, what impact might we have in passing on this legacy of faithful stewardship to our children and their children? How can Jesus help us do that?

Come on Sunday and find out!

See you in church -

Blessings, Don

Reformation Sunday
Season of Commitment

Reformation Sunday is also Commitment Sunday at

Silver Spring!

This Sunday is Commitment Sunday as well as Reformation Sunday at Silver Spring! Be sure to wear red and arrive 15 minutes before the worship service. For those who are able, we will meet in the north parking lot in the designated area near the steps to the spring. Then, a few minutes before the service starts, we will process behind our bagpiper into worship.

At the conclusion of the sermon in each service, Don will invite us to come forward to place our 2024 Stewardship Commitment Forms into the beautiful, hand-crafted wooden box designed specifically for this purpose. (Thank you, Flip Jones!)

The 2024 Financial Narrative document which the Commitment, Legacy and Endowment (CLE) and Finance Committees worked with Session to produce to help communicate Silver Spring’s current plans for 2024 and the anticipated resources required to achieve them is available at this link - 2024 Financial Narrative. If you have yet to review it, please do so.

Many of you have already taken advantage of the opportunity to make the financial portion of your 2024 commitment online. However, your commitment of time and talent, which are also gifts from God that we are called to steward, and which you were also invited to consider making, can only be done via the paper form. The form also provides the means you to inform our Business Manager that you have made your 2024 financial commitment online. Additional forms will be available on Sunday.

What portion of your income, time and talent is God calling you to give? Please express your commitment to supporting Christ’s work at Silver Spring in 2024 by carefully reading and prayerfully completing your 2024 commitment form, and bringing it with you to worship.

If you have already made your 2024 commitments, please come forward when Don calls us, and simply place your hand on the pledge box as your affirmation of your commitments, and the work we strive to do here at SSPC to love and serve God, our members, and our neighbors near and far.

Creche Exhibit at SSPC during Advent

Please make sure the manger scene is in a box, with your name on it, to Pastor Lisa’s office, along with any special information. These will be up through Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, and then you may retrieve your scene after Christmas.

Earth Care: What to do with leaves [Hint #3]

If your community doesn't have municipal composting, you can compost the leaves yourself. This is the most labor-intensive option, but the most satisfying. Compost bins can be made or bought and the basics of composting are simple to learn. B y next spring, you'll have a bin of compost to feed your flowers/veggies. You can practice at the church's composter or join in the fun of work day on November 18.

Mission

New Hope Ministries

New Hope has a special Thanksgiving request. They really need canned yams / sweet potatoes. Other canned vegetables will also be appreciated. If you are so moved, please have your donation to the New Hope bin outside the Chapel by October 29 so they can be delivered and logged in to New Hope prior to their Thanksgiving food distribution.

October 2023 ROAR Team Report

Your SSPC ROAR Team returned to Cairo West Virginia from Saturday, September 30 through Friday, October 06, 2023, to work with churches in and near Cairo that needed help with deferred maintenance on their church buildings. Twenty-two members and friends of the church were busy with various tasks throughout the week.

We started the week with worship at Huges River Presbyterian Church, visiting project sites and a wonderful evening of food and fellowship at the Ritter’s home.

Monday through Thursday found various ROAR Team groups working on six local churches of various denominations. The Teams power washed buildings, demolished a shed, rebuilt a shed including new doors and hardware, cleaned the interior of sanctuaries and wiped down pews with Murphy’s oil soap, scraped paint, painted, repaired soffits, removed old plumbing piping, built a wall for a storage room, installed new flooring, built new steps, re-decked a ramp, installed metal siding, removed an old exterior door and installed a new door in its place, and repaired a picnic shelter and installed new rain gutters on same.

We stayed at the North Bend Lodge and ate breakfast, lunch and dinner together at Kay’s restaurant in Cairo. Cairo is a pretty area but lacks choices for dining out, but no one went hungry. It was a good week that assisted the local congregations, all of which are struggling with low membership and the ability to maintain their sanctuaries. It was also an opportunity for fellowship within the Team and to reunite with friends made during past mission trips to the Cairo area.

The Team is grateful for the support and prayers of the congregation while we were away. Please take a minute to look at the pictures posted in the Gathering Space that highlight the week’s work.
