“The Work of the Spirit, Part 2: The Community of the Spirit”

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday we continue our 5-part Sermon Series entitled “The Work of the Spirit.”  Following the powerful Pentecost event, Luke (writer of both the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts) describes the idyllic early community of the faithful. [Acts 2:41-47] Together they worship, study and pray. They include one another in their table fellowship and share their goods to meet one another’s’ needs.  What might we learn from this first Spirit-led fellowship of the faithful?  What changes might it require of us?  How might the world around us be changed as a result?

Come on Sunday and find out!

We invite all of the young families from church and Preschool to bring their children, ages two to ten to SSPC on that date. We will enjoy making crafts for Mother's Day, playing games in the gym, enjoying freshly made pizza, nuggets and tater tots, with juice, and watching a G-rated short movie together. Can you believe it’s been 10 years? Come celebrate with us!!

On May 6th 2016, the Rev. Donald B. Wahlig was installed as Senior Pastor/Head of Staff of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. Since that time, he has faithfully led our congregation as we strive to be a grace-filled family of faith sharing Christ's love with all!

It was my great privilege to have served as chair of the Pastor Nominating Committee who recommended Rev. Wahlig’s call to SSPC. On behalf of your Session, your Fellowship Committee, and my former PNC colleagues, it is now my privilege to invite you to join us in the Gathering Place on May 10th after the 9:00 am service for a reception to celebrate Rev. Dr. Don Wahlig and this significant milestone in the life of SSPC! ~ Jim Anderson

Laundry Ministry Update

The SSPC Youth and CORE members continue their new ministry here at the church, the Laundry Ministry. We continue to collect quarters in the Gathering Place, in the laundry basket and purchase laundry cards to hand out to patrons at local Morris Laundromats. We are planning our next outing to the Dillsburg Morris Laundromat! We will update the congregation soon.

Storyboard Ministry

The SSPC Youth started a new ministry called the Storyboard Ministry! Here is how it works: The Youth have an easel in the Gathering Place with Post-it notes and markers. Fill out a Post-it note with a prayer request or hope (no names, please) and each Sunday we collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request.

If you see a request that you would like to take with you and pray for, feel free to do so. If you want to add one, please do as well. Our new box for answered prayers is in place beside the Storyboard. Feel free to place any answered prayers that you are thankful for in the box. God does indeed answer prayers! Blessings.

Short Stories

A group of us are writing a series of short stories reflecting the precious and tender work of a minister of word and sacrament. Please find the latest installment on the bulletin board. Any questions about this, please reach out to Pastor Lisa. If you would like to share something funny, meaningful, a God-sighting, please let me know. And let me know what you think! Warm regards- Lisa

Earth Care - Did you know?

Packing peanuts are actually a type of plastic [#6]. We know them as Styrofoam. There are 2 common types: polystyrene or biodegradable starch-based alternatives. To determine which type you are dealing with drop one of these into a glass of warm water; if it dissolves, it's a biodegradable starch peanut that can be composted. If it does not dissolve, it is not biodegradable and needs to be reused, recycled, or properly disposed of.

Mission

Christian Churches United - United in Love Conference, Saturday, May 16th, at Camp Hill United Methodist Church, 9 am - 3 pm

Since CCU's founding, together we have sought to love our neighbors well in the midst of crisis. Together we have walked with individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, and incarceration. We have seen and heard countless stories of lives being changed because, together, churches in Harrisburg sought to love well.

This May we invite you to gather together to dream of ways that we can continue to be United in Love. We invite you to respond to the call to embrace our neighbors, to educate ourselves in best practices, and dream of how we might embody the way of Jesus in our ever-changing world. Gather with other churches, all called and committed to love the people of Harrisburg well. Together we will imagine a way forward for loving our neighbors experiencing homelessness, poverty, and incarceration.
