"The Wonder of Three (in One)"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

The Holy Trinity – God the Creator, Jesus the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit – the Sustainer, is a key component of Christian Theology. The word Trinity does not appear in the Bible. It is a doctrine formulated in the early church to interpret the way God revealed God’s self, first to Israel, then in Jesus as Savior, and finally as Holy Spirit, who arrived that wonderous Day of Pentecost 50 days after Easter and became preserver and sustainer of the church.

The doctrine of the Trinity was developed in the early centuries of the church and was explicitly stated at the Council of Nicaea in 325. We affirm the Trinity when we say the Nicene Creed. The Trinity – God, Son and Holy Spirit, taken as a whole, is powerful (with three, powerful and distinct characteristics and personalities), and is part of our daily walk with God through Jesus Christ. As Christians, we begin our worship with speaking God’s praise through the name of God the Creator, Jesus, God’s son, and the Holy Spirit, and we pray in the spirit of the Triune God.

The Wonder of Three – and how Three can be One Whole, is a fascinating study. There much more to learn when we study the Trinity, and how the Triune God’s spirit is revealed through Creation, Science and Literature. There are examples of triple forces (working as one) in nature and science. Our entire universe is built on how electrons, protons and neutrons work together, as in one instance. Subatomic particles have three components - charge, mass and spin, and there are three states of matter – solid, gas and liquid, as two other examples. In drama, there is a rule of three – such as three acts, and novels include an opening, middle and close. Courses abound in how to write interesting content, using a rule of three. A famous phrase – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, was written by our founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence, and there is a rule of three in the military.

Why are all these examples important to ponder as we deepen our understanding of the Trinity? Come to church on Sunday to find out!

Blessings - Lisa

Families whose last name begin with the letters N to Z, bring a savory side dish to share. Look for a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place.

CE Honors Our High School Graduates

The Christian Education Committee would like to honor our 2022 and 2023 High School Graduates, this Sunday June 4th. Gifts and cards will be placed on the table of the Gathering Place for both services to be picked up there on Sunday. Any unclaimed cards will be delivered.

Sunday School and Adult Sunday Morning Bible Study this Week

We will study Genesis 1:1—2:4a. At the beginning of time, God expressed delight in Creation and declared all Creation “very good.” The readings on this Trinity Sunday invite us to explore and celebrate the many ways God is revealed in and through continuing relationships within Creation. God entrusts remarkable potential to all that is created. New beginnings emerge as the community of Creation lives into such promise. Come and learn, come and discuss.

Sympathy

We extend our sympathy and prayers to Kristen McGaffin and her family for the passing of her mother this week. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

Effective June 4th through August 27th, the Deacons will be serving iced tea and lemonade instead of coffee. We will not be making coffee as last summer a tremendous amount was wasted. For those who need coffee, we will still make hot water and will provide instant regular and decaffeinated. We appreciate your understanding as we take a break from coffee making in an effort to conserve.

Earth Care

Conventional toilet bowl cleaners contain harsh chemicals [chlorine, hydrochloric acid, and ammonia] that are harmful to the environment and pose health risks to your family. Low concentrations of chlorine can irritate the eyes and sinuses. Breathing hydrochloric acid vapors or contact with the skin can create serious health issues. In addition, the EPA considers hydrochloric acid a toxic chemical and it can harm ecosystems. Ammonia has the potential to cause burns when not used as directed.

Choosing safer alternatives helps keep toxins out of the home and protects the environment.

Two that are highly rated are Seventh Generation Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner and Mrs Meyers Clean Day Toilet Bowl Cleaner. For more information:

ROARING at MATE

The ROAR (Reach Out And Rebuild) Team is returning to Farmington, Maine to work with MATE (Mission At The Eastward) again this summer. We will be repairing homes for people who are unable to or cannot afford to do the work themselves.

The work week is Monday, July 31 through Friday, August 04, 2023. We arrive in Farmington on Saturday, July 29 so we can worship with the local community on Sunday morning and tour the project sites on Sunday afternoon. The kitchen and dining hall at St. Joseph’s church has been reserved for the week. We will stay in a dormitory at the University of Maine, Farmington.

The ROAR Team is not a particular group of people. A ROAR Team is made up of members and friends of the church who volunteer for a specific mission trip. As always, you don’t need to have building skills or a truck load of tools to participate. A willing heart to serve the Lord and hands and feet to do what you can to help a neighbor in need is all that is required. This is a wonderful opportunity to see a beautiful part of this country and share in work and fellowship with members and friends of Silver Spring Church. Youth up to the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or grandparent.

If you are interested in being part of this year’s MATE ROAR Team or need additional information please call Terry Reed at 717-766-2714 or send an e-mail to tsreed@verizon.net
