"Revealing the Kingdom - Part I"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday, we kick off a 3-part sermon series on Jesus’ teaching form the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s gospel. We begin with the beatitudes which Jesus uses to describe the reality of the Kingdom of Heaven. If ever there was a counter-cultural message of what constitutes blessedness it is surely what we read in these first 12 verses. These blessings which Jesus pronounces on the least and lowest of society - and on those who refuse to take advantage of them and stand up for them! - are the very opposite of the values of the Roman-dominated world in which they live. This is surely a message they have never heard before!

Jesus speaks about the Kingdom as a present reality, but how can the crowds, including his first four disciples, possibly trust that it is real? Where is his evidence? And what about you and me in this age? Where do we find evidence that the Kingdom Jesus proclaims is real? What does Jesus ask of us in revealing his Kingdom?

Come on Sunday and find out!

See you in church -

Blessings,

Don

Sunday School this week at 10 am

Sunday School continues this week for both children and adults. We continue with practice for our Intergenerational Choir promptly at 10 am, and then proceed into our Sunday School class. Both groups will study Matthew 5:1-12. This Sunday we begin a three-week exploration of a collection of Jesus’ sayings in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus’ radical vision of what God’s reign on earth might look like is a vision of wholeness for all people. Paul reminds us that God’s wisdom is different from worldly wisdom. Micah and the psalmist describe ways to live this beautiful vision. Come and discuss.

Intergenerational Choir in Concert this Sunday!

The Intergenerational Choir will be in concert this Sunday in the Gathering. We will be singing "Come, Let Us Gather"! Plan to be there to see in person this exciting new group of singers. Children, parents and grandparents will be singing together. We always welcome new members, even dogs, real ones!

Lunch Bunch - Thursday, February 2

We will be having lunch at a cozy, local favorite: Cafe Magnolia. We will gather at 11:30 am on Thursday February 2nd. Come join us! Call Lynne Jackson at 717-761-0940 or look for a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place. Please rsvp no later than January 31st.

Circle Rebekah - Feb. 9 - Bible study and fellowship opportunity for women

Our next meeting is February 9 at at 1:00 pm in the Chapel in person OR online via Zoom. We are using the PW/Horizons Bible Study: "Celebrating Sabbath – Accepting God’s Gift of Rest and Delight” by Carol M. Bechtel. This month's lesson, “Sabbath and Hospitality”, will be led by Lynne Jackson. The key idea: There is something in the very nature of Sabbath that demands that it be shared. Accepting the gift of the Sabbath also involves a commitment to hospitality.

If you would like to socialize before the Bible study, bring a sack lunch to the Parlor at 12:15 or join us for dessert at 12:40. The dessert will be provided by the hostess of the month, Claudia Brown.

All women of the church are welcome. For more information and the Zoom Link contact Emily Krebs, cell 717-805-5778 or [email protected].
