"Pentecost and the
Gift of the Spirit"
| | |
This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday! We will all wear red to symbolize God’s gift of the Holy Spirit to each and every one of us in our baptisms. As Paul writes in his letter to the Corinthians, the Spirit is manifest in a variety of gifts. These gifts differ, but they are all meant to be used to unite us in the body of Christ in order to serve him by sharing his love with all, as our congregational vision emphasizes. Unity and faithfulness, however, prove difficult for us as Christians today just as they did in Paul’s day.
What are our particular gifts of the Spirit? How do we recognize them and, most important, how do we make sure we are using them as God intends? What happens when we do?
Come on Sunday and find out!
See you in church -
Blessings,
Don

Pentecost Offering
Will you consider a special offering on Pentecost Sunday, May 28, to benefit Children and Youth? 40% of our donations stay local and our Mission Committee has selected VALLEY YOUTH HOUSE as the recipient. At risk and homeless teens and children receive housing, education and protection from this Harrisburg organization.
Click here for more about the Pentecost Offering.
P.S. Don't forget to wear red on Sunday, May 28!
Sunday School and Adult Sunday Morning Bible Study this Week
Sunday School resumes this week for both children and adults. There is no Intergenerational Choir, as we have finished for the season. We study Acts 2:1–21. This Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate God’s life-giving spirit poured out abundantly on the community of disciples. Rich images of wind and fire frame the proclamation of God’s power in words that all can understand. The Spirit’s blessing extends community through diverse persons and gifts for the common good. Come and learn about God's word, come and discuss.

Earth Care
PAUSE and remember those who gave their lives so we could enjoy ours. Memorial Day was first celebrated after the Civil War(1866) to honor and remember those who died in defense of their country. Do we follow that? Or are we too interested in other pursuits (golf, shopping sales, etc.)? We would do well to remember our heritage.
On Monday a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 pm.

New Hope Ministries
New Hope is in need of the following items: Tuna, kid's juice boxes, paper towels. Items can be placed in the bin outside the Chapel. Thank you!
Update from New Hope: Families who rely on schools for regular meals for their children face uncertainty in how they will feed their kids in the summer months. And others still struggling in this turbulent economy find it tough to afford groceries. You can help feed your hungry neighbors in need this summer. And, your compassionate gift today could be DOUBLED!
Our good friends at The Metzler Family Foundation are honoring the memory of Paul Metzler, who would have turned 56 years old this May, by matching every food donation received at New Hope through May 30. The first 56,000 pounds of food received will be matched dollar-for-pound - that's up to $56,000 which could also be received and would help us purchase even more food! AND, every financial gift received before May 30 (up to a total of $20,000) will also be matched dollar-for-dollar!
ROARING at MATE
The ROAR (Reach Out And Rebuild) Team is returning to Farmington, Maine to work with MATE (Mission At The Eastward) again this summer. We will be repairing homes for people who are unable to or cannot afford to do the work themselves.
The work week is Monday, July 31 through Friday, August 04, 2023. We arrive in Farmington on Saturday, July 29 so we can worship with the local community on Sunday morning and tour the project sites on Sunday afternoon. The kitchen and dining hall at St. Joseph’s church has been reserved for the week. We will stay in a dormitory at the University of Maine, Farmington.
The ROAR Team is not a particular group of people. A ROAR Team is made up of members and friends of the church who volunteer for a specific mission trip. As always, you don’t need to have building skills or a truck load of tools to participate. A willing heart to serve the Lord and hands and feet to do what you can to help a neighbor in need is all that is required. This is a wonderful opportunity to see a beautiful part of this country and share in work and fellowship with members and friends of Silver Spring Church. Youth up to the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or grandparent.
If you are interested in being part of this year’s MATE ROAR Team or need additional information please call Terry Reed at 717-766-2714 or send an e-mail to tsreed@verizon.net.
