Faithful Stewardship-
Part 3: How the Rich Fool Squandered His Money
| | |
This Sunday is the third Sunday of our Season of Commitment. We continue our sermon series on Faithful Stewardship, by focusing on Jesus’ parable of the foolish rich man in Luke 12:13-21. Jesus tells this parable to encourage his followers to avoid greed and the idolatry of money. What does the rich man get wrong about material wealth? What can you and I learn from him about faithful stewardship?
Come on Sunday and find out!
Sermons in this series:
Faithful Stewardship

November 2 Part 2: “How Zacchaeus Got Down from the Tree” [Luke 19:1-10]

SSPC’s 2026 Financial Narrative in support of our Season of Commitment is available!
We want you to know the Commitment, Legacy and Endowment (CLE) and Finance Committees have worked with Session to produce a 2026 Financial Narrative document to help communicate Silver Spring’s current plans for 2026 and the anticipated resources required to achieve them.
Recognizing that everything we do should focus on one or more of these areas - Loving and Praising God, Loving and Nurturing our Church Family and Loving and Serving our Neighbors, the narrative is organized via a framework that shows how our plans, programs and initiatives will, with your support, help us achieve our Mission in these important areas. The first six pages provide a summary and the remaining pages provide details regarding the purpose and 2026 goals of each committee of Session.
You can find a copy of the narrative at the following link – SSPC 2026 Financial Narrative. If you have any trouble viewing it, or need a hard copy, please contact Priscilla in the church office at priscillab@silverspring.org or 717-766-0204. We ask that you please review it as you prayerfully consider your commitment to continue Christ’s work at, and through, Silver Spring in 2026.
This Sunday’s Reflection on Commitment will be shared by Ty Headley and Sarah Neville. Don’t miss it!
We hope to see you in worship.

1734 Legacy Society Endowment Fund Balances Reach $1Million
When the Silver Spring 1734 Legacy Society was established in 2018, its goal was to establish a large enough (multi-million dollar) endowment through cash gifts and bequests such that a small percentage could be used to help Christ’s work continue to be done at, and through, Silver Spring for generations to come.
We’re very pleased to report the three permanent 1734 Legacy Society-eligible funds – The Fund for the Living Word and The Building and Grounds Fund, both established in 2016, and the preexisting Heritage Fund, established in 1931 and from which Silver Spring already receives distributions – reached an important milestone as of September 30th – a total balance of $1,028,151!
In addition to the current fund balance, fourteen individuals or couples have made a bequest in their wills or trusts directing that some portion of their estate be invested in one or more of the 1734 Legacy Society funds upon their passing. This is a very significant step on our way to achieving our total fund balance goal of approximately $6Million that we feel we need to help fund praising and worshiping God, maintaining and enhancing our buildings and grounds and carrying out our other important work of Christian Education, fellowship and community outreach/mission.
We want to thank those committed Christians whose vision, hard work and generosity helped us achieve this key milestone and position Silver Spring for a bright and impactful future. We still have a way to go on our journey to $6Million. If you’d like to learn more about the 1734 Legacy Society or how you can help us continue to move forward and grow, please go to https://www.silverspring.org/1734-legacy-society

The Silver Spring Retreat Center gets lots of use and the two wingback chairs that we have in the Great Room are threadbare. If you are considering redecorating or downsizing and have 2 matching chairs, we'd love to put them to use at the Retreat Center as a donation. They can be any style, preferably a neutral or earth tone color. Contact Karen Karkuff, Retreat Center Manager, with any ideas you have. 717-802-2067 or kkarkuff@comcast.net.
Shop early for Christmas gifts now! Discount cards to support the SSPC YOUTH
The SSPC Youth are continuing our effort to raise additional funds for our Christian Education programs. We believe in giving back to the congregation and not just asking for additional funding. So far this year we have plans to raise nearly $10,000 from donations and contributions. Here's how it works: the Discount Cards feature savings from 15 local and national programs, like restaurants, family fun centers and service organizations. (For example, Sal's Pizza in Mechanicsburg, Dad's Garage in Mechanicsburg, The Bagel Boutique in Mechanicsburg, Trindle Bowling Alley in Camp Hill, and Jiffy Lube in Mechanicsburg). The cards are usable until January 31, 2026, and can be used over and over, increasing your savings each time you visit. Each card costs $15 and can easily be paid for in just several visits to one of the featured businesses. This is how the SSPC youth can give back to our congregation. I will have several with me each Sunday. Just reach out to me at puppytrainer52@aol.com or call me at 717-389-5100 to request a card or cards. Then make out a check for SSPC and drop it off at the office or give it to me. They are great to use or give as gifts. For each card we sell, the SSPC Christian Education program will make $10, and we hope to sell another 100 cards in 2025. As always, the CE Youth appreciate your support of our efforts and your prayers.
Pastor Lisa is collecting new or used paperback or hardback books for our parishioners who can't get out to the library. Special books would be anything by Francine Rivers, Jan Karon, and Phil Gulley, who has the precious Quaker series that people love. Please drop them off at the office in a bag. Please note these will not be returned, but will be given to parishioners who can't get out. Large print would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
Women! Mark your calendars for our Women's Tea on Saturday, May 2nd from 11 am to 2 pm. Set up will be done on Friday, May 1. Please reach out to Pastor Lisa and Linda Adams If you were interested in being a hostess! Last year's hostesses will be contacted as well.

Earth Care
Did you know:
The U.S. aluminum can recycling rate was only 43% in 2023. That’s well below the 52% average recovery rate over the previous 30 years, and the gap represents the equivalent of every American discarding approximately 15 twelve-packs worth of aluminum cans annually, a loss of $1.2 billion worth of aluminum sent to landfills.

New Hope Ministries
1- New Hope Ministries is having a food drive on November 7th and 8th at the Walmart in Mechanicsburg from 8:30 to 4:30. The need for food at this time is critical since the government has not passed a budget and government workers are not getting paid and/or others are not receiving food stamps or other entitlements. Any donations will be very much appreciated. This is another way that we at SSPC can help our neighbors. Thank you and God bless you.
2- Last year, New Hope Ministries held their annual "Christmas Blessing Express," where 1891 households were able to shop for unwrapped gifts for the whole family. It makes a huge difference in the families' lives. Please click here for the "New Hope Ministries' Christmas Wish List" for families struggling during Christmas. The list contains suggested gift ideas, but feel free to buy what you believe someone would like as a gift. Unwrapped items should be dropped off at the Mechanicsburg Center no later than December 1st (donations to Door #4, left side of building). They are accepting only new clothing for children - tweens. No adult clothing, except what is listed on the Wish List. With your support, we can make this Season filled with Hope and Love to our neighbors in need.
2026 ROAR Winter Mission Trip
It is time to start planning for the winter ROAR Mission trip to Big Bend Habitat For Humanity in Tallahassee, Florida.
The ROAR Team will return to Tallahassee, Fla. to work with Big Bend Habitat For Humanity building homes for families who need a decent affordable place to live. As a reminder, a ROAR Team is not a specific group of people. ROAR Teams are made up of volunteers who are available at a specific time to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need to build, rebuild, or renovate homes. Building skills are not necessary, only willing hands and feet to witness to Jesus’ love by helping people in their time of need.
The work week will be Monday, February 02 through Friday, February 06, 2026. Volunteers will arrive in Tallahassee on Sunday, February 01. Departure dates will be as needed by the volunteers. We will be building new homes in an area of Tallahassee developed by Big Bend Habitat. It is important that I know how many people will be on the Team as soon as possible so hotel reservations can be completed.
If you are interested in being part of this ROAR Team or need additional information please contact Terry Reed at tsreed@verizon.net, by phone at 717-766-2714, or see Terry at church.
