Part 1: The Gift of the Spirit”

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday we begin a new 5-part Sermon Series entitled “The Work of the Spirit.”  We begin with Peter’s post-Pentecost call for the community of Jerusalem to repent of their sin in rejecting and killing Jesus, to be baptized, and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. [Acts 2 :14a, 36-41] How do we hear the call to repent? As baptized Christians, how do we experience the gift of the Spirit? How might our lives better express the Spirit’s presence and power?

New Bible Study Introduced! April 20th

CE is excited to present a new Men's Bible Study Class beginning on Monday, April 20th, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. What does the Bible say about the role of men on earth and in life? How does this correspond to how we live and act in today's world? What questions do you have as men, and what answers does the Bible provide? We will explore this and more from some of the leading teachers and clergy of today. We will discuss our thoughts, questions and our opinions. We will meet in Room 204, every first and third Monday of the month. The first meeting will also serve to shape future meetings. Suggestions for courses of study are welcome; contact Scott Pepperman at puppytrainer52@aol.com. This class is for all SSPC congregation men and friends, ages 18 and above.

Can you believe it’s been 10 years? Come celebrate with us!!

On May 6th 2016, the Rev. Donald B. Wahlig was installed as Senior Pastor/Head of Staff of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. Since that time, he has faithfully led our congregation as we strive to be a grace-filled family of faith sharing Christ's love with all!

It was my great privilege to have served as chair of the Pastor Nominating Committee who recommended Rev. Wahlig’s call to SSPC. On behalf of your Session, your Fellowship Committee, and my former PNC colleagues, it is now my privilege to invite you to join us in the Gathering Place on May 10th after the 9:00 am service for a reception to celebrate Rev. Dr. Don Wahlig and this significant milestone in the life of SSPC! ~ Jim Anderson

Gathering Video this week

The Gathering video this week is from the contemporary Christian music group, Elevation Worship. The song is a favorite in the Gathering, "Give Me Faith". The song talks about trusting God to do what He says, giving our lives to him and if even we are weak, and we may fail, God never will. Come at 10:55 am to see the performance or stay after the Benediction for an encore performance.

Young Family Activity - Saturday, May 2nd

Fresh off of our great Easter Egg Hunt, our next Young Family event is coming on Saturday, May 2nd. This will be our next Parent Drop-Off event at SSPC from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. We will give the parents of our young families some time to spend together, have dinner, go shopping, to a movie and just enjoy time together for a few hours. We invite all of the young families from church and Preschool to bring their children, ages two to ten to SSPC on that date. We will enjoy making crafts for Mother's Day, playing games in the gym, enjoying freshly made pizza, nuggets and tater tots, with juice, and watching a G-rated short movie together. May 3rd Adult Forum: “SSPC Finances 101 ~ Today and Tomorrow”

We invite you to join us for the Adult Forum on Sunday, May 3rd, at 10:10 AM in Room 204, where the Co-Chairs of the Finance Committee (Gary Hollinger and Gary Karkuff) and the Commitment, Legacy and Endowment (CLE) Committee (Jim Anderson and Bill Resser) as well as our church Treasurer, Don Winning, will be addressing questions such as:

What are SSPC’s average annual sources of income?

How does the annual Budget Process work?

What’s the difference between a Designated, Permanent and Non-Permanent Fund?

What’s the purpose and benefit of having “reserves”?

What are we doing, financially, to prepare for the future?

What are the 1734 Legacy Society endowment funds?

When do we plan to start using more of our endowment funds?

How do I become a member of the 1734 Legacy Society?

We hope to see you there!

eBay Sales Program Update

At its March meeting, the Session voted to make changes to our eBay sales program. Effective immediately, we will outsource the sale of goods to a trusted outside party. The church will receive 65% of the net proceeds to support missional projects, while the outside party receives 35%.

We will no longer be accepting donations of goods for this program.

We give heartfelt thanks to Tony Kren for creating and faithfully leading this ministry for the past 5½ years. When the COVID crisis threatened our annual Fall Faire, Tony used his computer and eBay skills to develop an online sales platform for the church. He continued the ministry long after the initial crisis, selling gently used goods donated by the congregation. The program grew significantly and has generated thousands of dollars to support our missions, with over 550 items currently in inventory.

Tony recently stepped away from the project, and despite efforts by a committee to find an internal replacement, no one was available to take over. The committee then arranged for an outside partner to help manage the existing inventory.

We also wish to thank the donors and those who assisted Tony in the ministry over the years who contributed to the success of the program. We remain hopeful that a group within the congregation will emerge to revive and continue this valuable ministry in the future.

Tinner-Fehr Scholarship

Thanks to the Tinner/Fehr families, SSPC students have a wonderful opportunity. Applicants for this scholarship must be current, active members of SSPC and either a high school senior or college student committed to a career in human healthcare and/or a human healthcare-related field of study. To apply for the scholarship, they must write a short essay that includes, but is not limited to, listing of the colleges to which they are applying, chosen major, career goal, and explaining how SSPC has influenced their lives and future career choices. Please submit your essay to the Deacon Moderator (Megan Crompton) or to the church office by May 15th.

Young Adults Christian Education Group, the Pathfinders!

CE and young leaders from SSPC started a new group for young adults over 18. Watch for new events being planned! For more information, please contact Ty Headley. The group is currently studying from the Book of Matthew. Come and discuss, come and learn!

Laundry Ministry Update

The SSPC Youth and CORE members continue their new ministry here at the church, the Laundry Ministry. We continue to collect quarters in the Gathering Place, in the laundry basket and purchase laundry cards to hand out to patrons at local Morris Laundromats. We are planning our next outing to the Dillsburg Morris Laundromat! We will update the congregation soon.

Storyboard Ministry

The SSPC Youth started a new ministry called the Storyboard Ministry! Here is how it works: The Youth have an easel in the Gathering Place with Post-it notes and markers. Fill out a Post-it note with a prayer request or hope (no names, please) and each Sunday we collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request.

If you see a request that you would like to take with you and pray for, feel free to do so. If you want to add one, please do as well. Our new box for answered prayers is in place beside the Storyboard. Feel free to place any answered prayers that you are thankful for in the box. God does indeed answer prayers! Blessings.

Tai Chi - Starting April 22nd

We are starting a Tai Chi class at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. This is a beginner class and open to all - bring a friend! For questions, please contact Lisa Janson at 717-385-5228 or lisaj626@gmail.com.

Short Stories

A group of us are writing a series of short stories reflecting the precious and tender work of a minister of word and sacrament. Please find the latest installment on the bulletin board. Any questions about this, please reach out to Pastor Lisa. If you would like to share something funny, meaningful, a God-sighting, please let me know. And let me know what you think! Warm regards- Lisa
