"The Better Part"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

In our gospel lesson on Sunday, Mary comes across in a much better light than Martha. But let’s be honest. If Martha doesn’t wash the dishes, then they stay dirty. The dishes will not wash themselves! Perhaps the problem has nothing to do with the dirty dishes. Maybe the issue has more to do with listening to God while we plow through those endless to-do lists that we all have.

Join us this Sunday as we welcome Rev. John Green to the pulpit.

General Announcements

Dear congregation:

On July 27 and August 3, I am doing a two-part sermon series on the power of prayer. On July 27, I will present the mechanics of prayer and a format that I have found to be personally helpful. The following Sunday, I'm going to give examples of answered prayer. I would love to share some of your stories of answered prayer in the sermon. You can either give me your name or you can make it anonymous.

I probably will only be able to share two or three. I have a few of my own stories to share, but I would really love to hear yours and share them if you are open to that.

Please email me at lisa@silverspring.org. Everything will be held in confidence. I will share the particulars, but not the name. If that is what you would like for me to do. Thank you.

Pastor Lisa

Sympathy

We extend our prayers and sympathy to Grace Russell for the death of her husband George this week. Please keep Grace and the Russell family in your thoughts and prayers.

This week's chapter is "God's Invitation Always Stands".  This class is for adults from 19 to 99, come and learn, come and discuss!

Youth Church and Preschool Sunday School finished their school year - see you in September!

Gathering Video for this Week

This week's video features contemporary Christian singer, Cody Johnson. The song is called; "By Your Grace". The song talks about how through God's grace, we have been set free, no matter our sins. Come and view at 10:55 am or stay after the Benediction and view an encore performance.

Another New Ministry from SSPC Youth!

The SSPC Youth and CORE members are pleased to announce a second new ministry here at SSPC. Inspired by our Meal with a Mission recent success with gathering laundry pods for Downtown Daily Bread, the new ministry is called Laundry Ministry. Look for the large container in the Gathering Place. We are asking the congregation to put a quarter in there every time you pass by. When we get about $20 or more in quarters, the youth will take them to a local laundromat and give them to patrons there, as outreach and taking our love for each other into our community. We appreciate the congregation's support of our efforts and as always, your prayers. Update - thanks to all who are contributing; we are heading out to a local laundromat on Saturday, July 19th to spread our good will, stay tuned!

Dining Out Group, July 22nd

Monday Bible Study, July 28th

All are invited to join this unique study. We meet 1 pm to 3 pm every other week. We continue a study of Revelation as we watch sessions by Rev. Gary Hamrick, from Leesburg, Virginia. Come and learn, come and discuss. This class is for adults from 18 to 99!

Wine Tasting Interest Group, August 10th

We are holding our next event at Mike and Nancy Gawlas' home on Sunday, August 10 from 4:00 -7:00. Their address is 612 S. Market St., Mechanicsburg, 17055. It will be outside and is sure to be a wonderful time. As usual, please bring an appetizer or something sweet to share. If you're interested in being put on the contact list for this group, please email Jenny Bell at belljen000@gmail.com or sign up in the Gathering Place. Please RSVP by August 4 if you're interested in attending.

Young Adults Group, the Pathfinders!

New in 2025, CE and young leaders from SSPC have begun a new group for young adults over 18. For further information, contact Ty Headley. This group is for young adults 19 and older, single or married! This new effort is specifically for our young adults and they are leading this effort and charting their own course. Watch for new events being planned!

Young Families Christian Education Group

Also new in 2025, CE has begun a new effort for our young families. We are meeting one Sunday a month with young families for lunch and discussion. We are planning one or more events this summer featuring earth care, food, fun and fellowship built for our young families. All interested families can contact Scott Pepperman at puppytrainer52@aol.com or 717-389-5100 for more information.

Manna Project

Over 17 years ago, SSPC began to welcome newcomers through the Manna Project. Each year, volunteers sign up to welcome visitors with a loaf of bread and to share information about SSPC along with what the church means to them. Many visitors have joined our church family because of a Manna Visit. Please consider participating in this project to welcome our new visitors. There is a new sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place. For any questions, please contact Shannon Leary at shanlear17@gmail.com.

Storyboard Ministry

The SSPC Youth started a new ministry called the Storyboard Ministry! Here is how it works: The Youth have an easel in the Gathering Place with Post-it notes and markers. Fill out a Post-it note with a prayer request or hope (no names, please) and each Sunday we will collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request.

Earth Care

Did you know:

Vampire power sucked up by idle devices makes up 5-10% of household electricity use. Unplug razors, electric toothbrushes etc. when not in use.

Mission

ROAR Summer Mission Trip

Instead of going north to Maine in August the ROAR Team will be heading south to Asheville, North Carolina for the week of Sunday, August 03 through Saturday, August 09, 2025 . We will be working with Asheville Habitat For Humanity building homes for people in need and/or rebuilding properties damaged by Hurricane Hellene in September of 2024. You do not need to be a skilled builder to be a part of the August ROAR Team, all you need is a willing heart to be the hands and feet of Jesus as we minister to our neighbors, some of whom lost all their worldly goods last fall. A ROAR Team is not a specific, skilled group of people. A ROAR Team is a group of volunteers gathered together as witnesses of God’s love, bringing hope to those in need.

If you are interested in being part of the August ROAR Team or need more information, please contact Terry Reed at 717-766-2714, tsreed@verizon.net, or see him at church.

New Hope Ministry

Needs for the month of July include: Canned meat, pasta/noodles, and canned vegetables. Donation bins are located by the Chapel. Thank you for your support to this local ministry!

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

THIS MONTH

- The Session voted unanimously to hire Austin Shoop as SSPC's next Youth Director. Austin started July 1 and can be reached at austin@silverspring.org. Many thanks to Drew Crompton and the search team working on behalf of the Personnel Committee. Please congratulate Austin!

- Vacation Bible School was a success! The CE Committee, Pastor Lisa Chase, and numerous volunteers did fine work leading the children through biblical examples of divine rescue. The kids and volunteers all had a terrific time, and learned how God rescues his children throughout scripture, especially in Jesus Christ!

- The Fellowship Committee helped us celebrate both mothers and fathers this past month with special receptions between the two Worship services. Thanks to our Fun-Loving Fellowship folks!
