“God's Spark"

WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY

When Jesus ascended to God the father, he promised that he would send a Comforter – the Holy Spirit. The arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost was nothing less than spectacular. Those present spoke in languages other than their own, praising God and fulfilling Joel’s prophecy. Tongues of fire rested above them, a mighty wind filled the area and about 3,000 were baptized that day.

Pentecost itself was already a Jewish celebration. Known as the Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot, it was a pilgrimage festival celebrated in Jerusalem fifty days after Passover. Originally a harvest festival, Pentecost became associated with God giving the law to Moses on Mount Sinai. Jewish people had celebrated it for centuries by gathering in Jerusalem, offering thanksgiving to God, praying, and remembering God’s covenant faithfulness. The Holy Spirit had quite the crowd to make Its appearance!

At Pentecost, God’s Spirit, moved once again as it had throughout salvation history: at Creation, in the words of the Prophets, at the Annunciation. The same divine spark that brought order out of chaos and life where there was emptiness now descended upon the disciples and the Christian Church was born.

But the following questions beg to be asked: “Have we lost that spark that was first present at Pentecost?” If so, how can we rekindle the Pentecost Spark – God’s Spark, nourish it, and allow the Holy Spirit to renew both the Church our ourselves today?

This will be a very special service! Let’s celebrate the birth of the Church on Pentecost Sunday! Please wear RED!

See you on Sunday

Pentecost Special Offering

Acts 2:1-4 “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

This scripture fulfilled Jesus's promise to send a "helper" or "advocate" and symbolizes the birth of the Church. Christ calls each of us to be helpers or advocates. As confirmed Christians, we are called to love our neighbors, spread the word, strive to help those in need and care for the least of these.

Pentecost will be celebrated on Sunday, May 24 when we will receive the Pentecost special offering. As we celebrate the birth of the Christian church let us also celebrate all that God has blessed us with. This year 100% of the Pentecost offering stays local. The Mission Committee has designated the Pentecost offering recipient as Valley Youth House which serves Cumberland & Perry counties. Their programs include Street Outreach Program, Runaway and Homeless Youth services, Transitional living for ages 16–24, and Rapid rehousing and Family reunification support. Valley Youth House is the largest youth homelessness provider in Central PA and the most specialized in runaway youth. This is an opportunity for us to change the lives of at-risk youth. Loving our neighbors through our financial support for these youth on the margins can lift them up and be the doorway into a better future.

May the Holy Spirit descend upon us and guide us as we give generously to support these youth in need.

Fall Faire - October 24, 2026

Fall Faire will be held Saturday, October 24th, from 8 am – 1 pm. All the fan favorites – Apple Dumplings, Sticky Buns, White Elephant, Christmas Shoppe, Soups, Toys, Children’s Activities, Boutique and more – will be there! Marketing materials will be available to take to area businesses after June 1st.

This year, the Fall Faire committee – a dedicated group of wonderful Deacons, are looking for beautiful items to place and sell in the Boutique area. If you are looking to downsize, or you have things you just need to get rid of, we’d love to take a look at any accessory items and furniture, such as lamps, side tables, small sofas, paintings, chairs – and have first dibs on what you want to get rid of before you do anything else with them. Please contact Pastor Lisa, who will then schedule with the FF team to come and look at the items first. Please note that for the White Elephant section, we are no longer taking glassware or small appliances. The volunteer assignment board will be up August 8th, and we will begin taking donations the first week of September.

CE is excited to present our new Men's Bible Study Class that started on Monday, May 11th, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. What does the Bible say about the role of men on earth and in life? What about how to act in marriage, at work and in the community. How does this correspond to how we live and act in today's world. What questions do you have as men, what answers does the Bible provide. We will explore this and more from some of the leading teachers and clergy of today. We will discuss our thoughts, questions, and our opinions. We will meet in Room 204, every second and fourth Monday of the month. We will meet next on May 25th, even though it is Memorial Day. Suggestions for courses of study are welcome; contact Scott Pepperman at puppytrainer52@aol.com. This class is for all SSPC congregation men and friends, ages 18 and above.

Laundry Ministry Update - Loads of love!

The SSPC Youth and CORE members continue their new ministry here at the church, the Laundry Ministry. We continue to collect quarters in the Gathering Place, in the laundry basket and purchase laundry cards to hand out to patrons at local Morris Laundromats.

Update: Members of our youth CORE group visited the Morris Laundromat in Dillsburg recently. We had our most active outing to date, visiting with 20 patrons and handing out 10 laundry cards. The youth performed with the Holy Spirit as servant leaders. Everyone thanked us and asked about where we came from and about SSPC. Our next outing will be to the Morris Laundromat in Enola. Thank you for your contributions and faith in our efforts. Blessings.

Storyboard Ministry

The Youth have an easel in the Gathering Place with Post-it notes and markers for your prayer requests (no names, please). Each Sunday we collect the requests and pray for them at our CORE meetings. Whatever is on your heart, put it on the storyboard and we will pray for each request. If you see a request that you would like to take with you and pray for, feel free to do so. If you want to add one, please do as well. Our new box for answered prayers is beside the Storyboard. Feel free to place any answered prayers that you are thankful for in the box. God does indeed answer prayers! Blessings.

Manna Project

Over 15 years ago, SSPC began welcoming newcomers through the Manna Project. Each year, volunteers sign up to welcome visitors with a loaf of bread and to share information about SSPC along with what the church means to them. Many visitors have joined our church family because of a Manna Visit. Please consider participating in this project to welcome our new visitors. There is a new sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place. For any questions, please contact Shannon Leary.
