"Parables of Jesus for Faithful Stewards:
Part 2: The Joy of Faithful Community"
| | | |
This Sunday we continue our 4-part Sermon Series called “Parables of Jesus for Faithful Stewards.” In this series, we reflect on Jesus’ parables and commands to help us love God, our SSPC faith family, and our neighbors outside.
This Sunday, Jesus has reached Jerusalem where he quickly escalates his conflict with the greedy and corrupt Jewish leadership. Jesus tells this parable of a Wedding Banquet thrown by a King for his son. The King (God) sends messengers to invite the elite of the Kingdom (Elders, Scribes and Pharisees) to celebrate. The elite ignore the king’s invitation. The King punishes them and then throws the door wide open to the rest of the people, and yet not even all of them are suited for the wedding banquet.
This is, of course, a parable about judgment on those who resist and oppose God’s son Jesus and his good news. What often gets lost, however, is what it tells us about the persistence of God in forming the joyous community of those who follow his son, a community defined not only by what we profess, but equally by loving acts of service to help one another experience Christ’s joy. How do we do that here at SSPC? What does it mean for us to be faithful in serving one another, expressed in our Vision Statement to “become more and more of a grace-filled family of faith sharing Christ’s love with all?” How might we do that even more faithfully?
Come on Sunday and find out!
See you in church -
Blessings, Don

Fall Faire Parking Instructions for All SSPC Members:
This year remote parking for the Fall Faire will again be at the Waugh Wilson House, 404 Silver Spring Road. SSPC members who work at or visit the Fall Faire between 7:00 am and 12:30 pm are asked to use this remote parking site to free up parking for our visitors during the busy morning hours. The area for parking will be on the flat grassy area to the right as you enter the driveway. Please park perpendicular to Silver Spring Road and leave a wide center lane.
A shuttle will be running between the Fall Faire and remote parking site from 7:00 am until 12:30 pm. By then, SSPC members who will rely on the shuttle may move their cars from the remote site to a church parking lot.
SSPC members with crafts/goodies for the Faire may drop them off at the church, and then proceed to the remote parking site. Please remember the road in front of the gym and Gathering Place will be one-way from the upper parking lot (closest to the Manse) to the lower parking lot (behind the Meeting House). Thank you!

This Sunday’s Reflection on Commitment focuses on “Loving and Serving our Members"
Christ calls each of us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) Throughout our Season of Commitment, we are focusing on how we are striving to live out Christ’s Greatest Commandment by loving and worshipping God; loving and serving our members; and loving and serving our neighbors.
This Sunday, Emily Krebs will help us focus specifically on the ways that we love and serve our members here at Silver Spring and our hopes and dreams for this critically important aspect of our ministry in the coming year.
We hope to see you in church this Sunday!

Commitment, Legacy, and Endowment Committee
SSPC’s 2024 Financial Narrative in support of our Season of Commitment is available!
We want you to know the Commitment, Legacy and Endowment (CLE) and Finance Committees have worked with Session to produce a 2024 Financial Narrative document to help communicate Silver Spring’s current plans for 2024 and the anticipated resources required to achieve them.
Recognizing that everything we do should focus on one or more of these areas - Loving and Worshipping God, Loving and Serving our Members and Loving and Serving our Neighbors, the narrative is organized via a framework that shows how our plans, programs and initiatives either continue what we’re doing in 2023, enhance our efforts or, perhaps, allow us to reduce the resources required.
You can find a copy of the narrative at the following link – SSPC 2024 Financial Narrative. If you have any trouble viewing it, or need a hard copy, please contact Priscilla in the church office at priscillab@silverspring.org or 717-766-0204. We ask that you please review it as you prayerfully consider your commitment to continue Christ’s work at, and through, Silver Spring in 2024.
Blessings,
Bill Resser, Co-Chair

Earth Care
What to do with your fallen leaves?
Hint #1: Lose your leaf blower. It is rude to blow leaves into your neighbor's yard. If you blow the leaves into the street, they may end up clogging storm drains and/or flooding when it rains. This also creates more noise and pollution. Stay tuned for hint #2.
