CD4 Harbor Tour Sold Out!

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the 2026 District 4 Harbor Tour. We are officially sold out! Anyone interested in joining the wait list can email us at district4@longbeach.gov with the total number of people in your party, including yourself, and names for each person. Juneteenth Holiday Closures TODAY
June 19th | All day, Citywide
In observance of Juneteenth today, City Hall offices and public services are closed. There is no scheduled street sweeping or enforcement of street sweeping violations on Friday, but trash and recycling will be collected as normal. El Dorado Nature Center and El Dorado Regional Park are open. The closures also include all library branches. For a full list of closures, view the press release at this link. Postal Service facilities will be closed for retail transactions today. There will be no residential or business deliveries. Organics and Recycling Inspections
Through July 1st
The City began its annual commercial route review on June 15th as required under SB 1383, organics recycling law. This includes cart and bin inspections for both City‑serviced commercial accounts and those served by permitted private haulers. Inspectors will leave printed tags on containers where contamination is found. No fines will be issued during this review cycle. Approximately 190 City‑serviced accounts and 150 private‑hauler accounts will be included in the inspection sample. Commercial accounts with questions about the process or future notices may contact the City at LBRecycles@longbeach.gov or their hauler, depending on their private hauler.

LBPL Summer Reading Program
Through August 8th
The Long Beach Public Library invites the community to participate in the “Plant A Seed, Read!” annual Summer Reading Program that runs through Saturday, August 8th. The free eight-week program encourages children, teens and adults to read, learn, and explore all summer long through books, activities and family-friendly events at all 12 library locations. Participants can earn points by reading books, attending library programs, completing creative challenges and discovering new interests. Residents can register for the Summer Reading program either in person at any library location or online through the Beanstack platform using this link.

All Fireworks are Illegal in Long Beach
There was recently talk of allowing “Safe & Sane” fireworks in Long Beach, but that is not happening. The City will be adhering to the existing policy that was revised five years ago. In an effort to bolster fireworks-related enforcement throughout the city, City Council unanimously approved an enhanced fireworks ordinance within the City Health and Safety Code, outlined in Long Beach Municipal Code Chapter 8.81. This action created a new fireworks ordinance specific to Long Beach and expanded the scope of liability and penalties associated with illegal fireworks activity. Read more using this link.

Summer Food Program 2026
Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will once again offer the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Summer Food Service Program to provide free, nutritious meals to Long Beach youth ages 1 to 18 over the summer months on weekdays now through August 21st. Lunches will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participating CD4 parks include Stearns Champions Park and Whaley Park. OLLI Summer Classes 2026

Long Beach State's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) hosts non-credit courses for persons 50 years of age or older. Summer classes will be held from July 6th to August 29th. Registration is now open for the Summer 2026 session. For more info and to register for courses, please click here.

Friends of the LBPL Essay Contest
Through August 8th
The Friends of the Long Beach Public Library is hosting a summer essay contest from now until August 8th. The contest is open to participants ages 6 to 18 years old with different age divisions and essay word count. The writing prompt is: What was the coolest book you read this year and what was your favorite part? Entries can be submitted in English or Spanish. Pet Supplies Plus Special Event

I had the honor of participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony for Pet Supplies Plus at the grand opening event on August 11, 2020. Those were uncertain times during COVID-19 restrictions, but they have been going strong ever since. You can join Pet Supplies Plus at the Los Altos shopping center tomorrow for the Redford Naturals 10-Year Anniversary Party! The celebration will include samples, freebies, games and prizes. Next on the City Council Agenda
Tuesday, June 23rd
The City Council meeting of Tuesday, June 23rd has been canceled. The meetings for Tuesday, July 7th and Tuesday, July 14th have also been canceled for Summer Recess. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 21st. This will be the first council meeting where Long Beach will offer virtual public comments via Zoom in compliance with SB-707. The new option allows community members who wish to provide comments to participate remotely.

Long Beach Muni Band Concert Series

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is proud to announce the 117th season of the Long Beach Municipal Band summer concert series, the nation’s longest standing city-funded municipal band. This year’s performance theme, Picnics and Pops, is an ode to the City's iconic history, culture and community through popular hits across the decades. Concerts will take place at five Long Beach parks beginning Tuesday, June 23, through Friday, July 31. Each performance week will have a different theme, offering spectators a variety of musical entertainment all summer long. All concerts begin at 6:30 pm and are free. Happy Father's Day to our LBFD Dads
A few years back, we did a story on the Hancock oil fire that took place over a three-day period in 1958. I mentioned that my LBFD father was among those who fought the fire. That prompted a response from one of our newsletter readers who told us that Billie Jean King wrote about the Hancock oil fire in her book, “All In”. Billie Jean's father, Bill Moffitt, was an LBFD firefighter/engineer, and our reader wanted to know if our fathers had worked together. I responded that our dads had worked together, were the same age and attended Poly HS and LBCC together. They also both served in WWII and joined the LBFD after the war. I was honored to present Billie Jean King with an official LBFD photo of her dad when she was here for her library naming on September 21, 2019. She seemed very touched and told me she had never seen the photo before.
On Tuesday night, I had the rare opportunity to chair the city council meeting. Tuesday's date, June 16th, would have been my dad's 108th birthday. I closed the meeting in recognition of his birthday and shared a story about his relationship with the Mayor's office. In his 27th year on the job, at age 56, Don Supernaw received a certificate of recognition for "prompt and courageous actions" in the line of duty. He got a kick out of the fact the certificate was signed by Mayor Tom Clark who had been his long-time councilman. When anyone mentioned that 56 years of age was a little old to be getting a hero award, my dad replied with his usual sense of humor, “I had to wait for my councilman to become Mayor to sign the certificate”, I picked up on that theme in my closing remarks at the council meeting. I said that 108 years is a long time to wait for city council to recognize a birthday, but my dad had to wait until his son was sitting in the Mayor’s seat to make it happen.
