Long Beach Sees Surge in COVID-19 CASES

With high demand due to the holiday, combined with inclement weather and the surge in cases, it is important for people to make testing appointments. The average daily number of cases increased by 1,234%, from 44 cases on December 1st to 587 on December 29th. These are some of the highest daily numbers Long Beach has seen since mid-January 2021. You can read more details in the City’s December 30th press release at this link. People should get tested if any symptoms are present or if they have been in close contact with someone who has or is suspected to have the virus, regardless of vaccination status. To schedule your appointment, visit longbeach.gov/covid19testing or call 562.570.4636.

Santa “Caught” Fishing at El Dorado Park

On Monday, Santa visited El Dorado East Regional Park to try out the fishing. He also brought along some fishy prizes and a $22,000 check from Berkley to go toward habitat restoration and wildlife education. Fox 11 was on hand to broadcast live as the lake was stocked with rainbow trout. I stopped by in time to record a video (below) of the moment Santa declared, “release the fish”. Thanks to everyone who voted for Long Beach in Berkley Fishing's "Santa Fishes" contest.

LGB Taxiway L Construction Project

A major construction project to improve the safety of the Long Beach Airport (LGB) airfield will commence the first week in January and is expected to last through August 2022. The $25 million project is primarily funded by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It will reconstruct Taxiway L, which is the primary taxiway for all departing commercial aircraft. The construction will occur adjacent to the main runway which will close nightly from 10 pm to 6 am except for Friday and Saturday evenings. Due to the closure, operations will shift to Runway 08L-26R which runs parallel to Wardlow Road. Read more details here.

January Community Budget Meetings Canceled

On December 23rd, the City asked council offices to promote four FY23 Community Budget Meetings taking place in January. We did not feature the announcement in last week’s newsletter, but others did. A City webpage was also created with details about the meetings. On December 28th, we were advised that we should not share any meeting information because they would not be taking place. The cancelations are due to COVID, and it does not look like virtual meetings will be possible. City Council had requested that the annual budget process start earlier in the year, but it will not be happening in January 2022.
