Private Sneakers Ribbon Cutting Event

On Saturday morning, we joined the grand opening/ribbon cutting event at Private Sneakers. They have moved from 4640 E. PCH (near Staples) to 1900 Ximeno in the Vons Circle Center. The storefront is next to Planet Fitness in the former Petco Unleashed location. We supplied our giant Go Fourth! scissors, the red ribbon and a certificate commemorating the event. They supplied a long line of customers, physically distanced in the parking lot and braving a light rain. Congratulations to Private Sneakers on a very successful event. You can check them out at this link.

El Dorado Duck Pond Restoration Update

Last week, we held our first meeting with Public Works and Parks & Rec on the El Dorado Duck Pond restoration project. We reported on the project in last week’s newsletter, but we can now confirm there will be a virtual public meeting on the project in February. The pond’s restoration has been in the planning stages for a long time, but CD4 just inherited the area through redistricting. Construction is scheduled to begin on the duck pond, just S/E of Studebaker Rd. and Willow St. in January 2022 with anticipated completion in Spring 2023. The first phase of construction will begin next week with the removal of 27 non-native trees. The project biologist has conducted a tree survey prior to the scheduled removal to ensure proper wildlife protection. The project rehabilitation will replant a total of 33 new trees within the renovated site.

The project will convert the pond to a recycled water storage facility by creating a disinfection system that will allow the water to be reused for downstream irrigation. The project also improves landscaping with natural diverse plant material, eradicates invasive plant species and will help restore habitat around the pond with native trees and vegetation. Renovations to the concrete walkway and reconstruction of the shoreline will allow for improved accessibility. For more information and questions, please see the Public Works Construction Notice at this link.

This week, LGB provided the photo below providing a closer look at how they are “paving the way” with sustainability efforts. The project will replace existing taxiway lights and signage to LED. They are also recycling asphalt killings to be used as a sub base for the new pavement. You can read more about the project at this link.

Parking Lot Takeover Event Last Saturday Night

Many residents reached out to us Saturday night, January 15th, reporting street racing along the Bellflower Blvd. and Spring St. corridors. Everything was emanating from a car meetup event in the Lowe’s parking lot. Many asked what the City and LBPD was doing to address the issue, and most did not know I had introduced a new City ordinance last July to enhance penalties. My council agenda item passed unanimously, and we are waiting for the City Attorney to present the final version. The item below is from our July 16, 2021 newsletter, and it announced our proposed ordinance. You can view the 7/20/21 City Council proceeding at this link. Click on Item 13 in the left column or scroll to the 1:55:42 mark.

Go Fourth! Friday Newsletter item - July 16, 2021:

City Ordinance to Address Street Takeover Events

Last Friday night at 10:40 pm, the intersection of Bellflower and Stearns was completely shut down by a street takeover event. Participants and spectators blocked traffic in all directions while multiple cars were dangerously performing "donuts" within the intersection. I was contacted while the event was happening, and I spent the rest of the weekend collecting information and video evidence. On Monday morning, our office submitted a city council agenda request to prepare a city ordinance to enhance penalties for participating in or being a spectator at a street takeover. You can read the agenda item at this link. The intent of the item is to ensure we are doing everything possible to deter these events from happening in our city. We need to proactively address this issue BEFORE someone is seriously injured or killed.
