Fire Recruit Graduation Ceremony

Last Saturday, I attended the LBFD 2022A Fire Recruit Graduation at the Captain David Rosa Regional Training Center in CD4. The ceremony also honored the 2020A class who graduated December 2020 but did not receive an official ceremony due to COVID. Both classes completed 14 weeks of rigorous training to prepare them to serve our community. Congratulations to all the graduates! Semper Paratus (always prepared).

Yesterday, I had the honor of serving as a co-chair of the 10th Annual Cottonwood Awards Luncheon at Rancho Los Alamitos. It is the signature RLA event and the biggest fundraiser of the year supporting the Rancho’s educational mission. Long Beach Measure M Updates

With the court ruling of Measure M, The Board of Water Commissioners has taken every action to meet the court’s ruling.

  • On March 31, the Board of Water Commissioners voted to return the full initial city payment of $9 million to ratepayers in the form of a $100 one-time bill credit.
  • On May 4, the Board voted to reduce water rates by 2.54 percent to reflect no longer collecting rate revenue for the purpose of a Measure M transfer to the city’s general fund. That rate change was approved by the Long Beach City Council on May 10.
  • On May 12, the Board voted to return the second city payment of $21.8 million, minus about $800,000 in attorney fees, to the ratepayers with a second one-time bill credit.
  • Future Long Beach Water Department budgets and rates will not include revenues from Measure M.

And Finally....

Bouton Creek - Then and Now

Thursday morning, we were happy to see debris being removed from the Bouton Creek storm channel near Clark Ave. just south of Atherton. Our office requests these clean ups, but the channel is under the jurisdiction of the LA County Department of Public Works. LACDPW does a great job which requires lowering a skip loader into the channel with a crane.

Bouton Creek has a long history that predates the neighborhoods of Artcraft Manor, Los Altos and Park Estates. The source of the creek was Bouton Lake located in what is now the City of Lakewood. The creek ran south to a point just east of Lakewood Blvd and Willow Street. As shown in the 1927 aerial photo below, instead of heading east along Willow to Clark, as it would in later years, it continued diagonally across the area that became Artcraft Manor and Stearns Park. It was likely the source of the Stearns Park artesian wells that were tapped by LBWD in the 1930’s. It finally connected to Clark Ave. at a point between Atherton and Stearns. From there, it continued to the east/west leg that forms the northern border of Park Estates. It cuts across the CSULB campus and connects with the Los Cerritos Channel south of Sato High School.
