Hot Topics

Community Hospital Winter Shelter

A plan to establish a winter shelter for the unhoused at Community Hospital will be on Tuesday’s City Council agenda. The title of the agenda item #33 is below under the heading “Next on the City Council Agenda”. Tonight (Friday at 5 pm), you’ll be able to access the agenda item and supplemental material at this link. City staff has also created an FAQ Sheet that is available now at this link.

Past and Ongoing Events

Belmont Shore Christmas Parade

The huge crowds were back on 2nd Street for the first Christmas Parade in three years. Circle Porsche provided us with a red 911 convertible, and we handed out more than 2,600 mini candy canes. The only thing we heard more than Merry Christmas was “nice car”. It marked the last time we will have a parade car from Circle Porsche. This week, the 53-year-old dealership was sold to Fletcher Jones and is being renamed Porsche Long Beach. The great news is they will remain at the traffic circle! You can visit their website here, and we’ll have more information in next week’s newsletter.

New El Dorado Pickleball Courts

The new pickleball courts at El Dorado Tennis Center opened this week. Our council office provided the funding of more than $7,000 for restriping and new nets. To celebrate, free play was offered on Tuesday morning. Pickleball on a drop-in basis is offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, as well as Friday nights for $5 per person. It is anticipated these schedules will evolve over time. Contact the operator, Bridge the Gap, for more information at (562) 425-0553 or visit the BTG Tennis website at this link.

Sidewalk Vending Survey Available Online

The City of Long Beach is initiating its outreach efforts to receive community input on sidewalk vending. City staff is gathering community perspectives to assist in the development of rules and regulations. The survey is anonymous unless you choose to share your contact information; demographic questions are also included. Responses are due by Sunday, Dec.18, 2022. For more information, call (562) 570-6211 or read the press release at this link. 99-Year Holiday Tradition at F&M Bank

December 12th - 17th | regular bank hours | 2302 Bellflower Blvd.

Wassail & Gingerbread week at Farmers & Merchants Bank since 1923! Interestingly, the story of wassail & gingerbread begins in the warm summer months in Downtown Long Beach. Carrie Walker, wife of F&M Bank Founder, C.J. Walker, offered lemonade to clients waiting in line at the un-airconditioned Main Office. Looking for a way to continue the tradition during the winter, Carrie decided to serve the family's wassail recipe with a slice of homemade gingerbread. Every year in December, clients are served wassail & gingerbread at each F&M Bank branch office including the Los Altos branch all next week at 23rd and Bellflower.
