CEDR Fall Update to the Business Community

Happy November! I wanted to update the Business Community on 2023 activities and results of CEDR, Clatsop SBDC & the Clatsop WORKS summer paid internship program.

This year, our team has also been given the responsibility for the Clatsop Community College Community Education & Workforce Training programs.

All non-credit programs at CCC are now under Jessica Newhall and myself. We are very excited to build these important programs for the future, and will feature more results in my next update.

CEDR UPDATES:

· CEDR is focused on workforce training and development in partnership with Clatsop Community College, Col-Pac, and NOW (Northwest Oregon Works) to maximize local job skills opportunities.

· Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). Gave testimony to the Board of Forestry and the House Committee on Natural Resources in Salem on the devastating impact the proposed HCP would have in Clatsop County, including dramatic ODF harvest revenue cuts to CCC, K-12 schools, rural law enforcement, roads and much more. $8.5M annual reduction. Estimated Clatsop County Job Loss- 275

· The Clatsop Job & Career Fair was held on March 15. 650 students from seven high schools participated in the AM sessions, and the energy was very high, with over 80 employers participating.

· CEDR annual awards event held on April 6 at the Seaside Convention Center! Thirteen awards were given, including the Skip Hauke “Spirit of Business: Community Supporter” award to Past State Senator Betsy Johnson. A very special evening for all!

· CEDR is a primary member of the Clatsop County Childcare Advisory Committee and was excited that $620,000 was allocated over 3 years from ARPA (America Rescue Plan Act) funds from Clatsop County, and significant funds from Providence Seaside Hospital and Columbia Memorial Hospital.

The grant committee reviewed the round one application for the first funding cycle and awarded $226,500 to 12 childcare businesses in Clatsop County. Round two was recently completed with 7 childcare businesses receiving $147,000 in funding, with another round in January 204 coming! An element of receiving the funding is participating in a “Strengthening Business Cohort”, led by our Clatsop SBDC and the regional CCRR (Child Care Resource & Referral) group,

· CFEDC (Clatsop Forestry Economic Development Committee) Leaders Tour held on Friday, 10/13. I welcomed the group by reinforcing the economic importance of this sector to our local economy, and introduced elected officials in attendance, including Senator Suzanne Weber & Rep. Cyrus Javadi

· The NEW CEDR Website is launched! Clatsop Community College

· In January of this year, we assumed the responsibility at CCC of the Workforce Training and Community Education departments, and the Clatsop Center for Business, Community & Workforce Development was created, encompassing the above areas and the Clatsop SBDC. Jessica Newhall was promoted to Director of the area, and I serve as the Associate Vice-President. Jason Edwards serves as the Workforce Development Coordinator and Kinga Sanders is the Community Education Coordinator. Misty Bateman was also promoted to manager this past year and has taken on the CWE (Cooperative Work Experience) area at the college.

Clatsop Community College SBDC 2022-October 2023 results:

· Met with 456 clients in FREE and CONFIDENTIAL advising sessions.

· 104 live and “on-demand” courses were offered, with 1338 registrants.

· Advised 151 minority businesses (130 were Latino), and 163 Women-owned businesses.

Business Starts: 37.

Jobs Created: 94. Jobs Retained: 128.

Access to Capital Assistance: $4,283,000.

· Jessica Newhall continues as the Associate Director, with responsibility for all staff reporting to her. Meyer Freeman serves as the Lead Advisor. Aziz Chebili joined the team this summer as my assistant and the CEDR/SBDC/CCC South County office manager. Hermes Ochoa and Rocio Lizarraga Simmons continue to serve the Latino business community. Eric Stromquist serves as an advisor, with a specialty in restaurants.

· Jason Edwards joined our team recently as the SBDC Programming Coordinator, and is also the author of the Clatsop SBDC weekly “Small Biz” newsletter. (If you are not receiving it, email us at sbdc@clatsopcc.edu and we will add you to the list!)

· The CEDR Clatsop WORKS paid internship program grew this year under the leadership of Clatsop WORKS Manager Misty Bateman. We had 31summer interns this summer, with 25 host sites registered, a record number! Employer recruitment is in full swing now, and if you want to be an employer for this next cohort, contact Misty at mbateman@clatsopcc.edu. The deadline is December 15^th to apply.

· Clatsop WORKS was awarded the Community Partner of the Quarter Award from Tongue Point Job Corps! The award stated: “Clatsop WORKS is dedicated to the community and offers many students paid summer internships and professional development opportunities.” Congratulations, Misty!
