Notes from our Director of Music

Michael Burroughs

A few months after my arrival at Saint Andrew's, we received a grant from the Valley Foundation to purchase a new piano of concert quality. Showcasing Bay Area artists, and especially the many wonderful students at schools in the area, was one of the main reasons for this. I began searching, and soon found what I thought might be elusive through Wells Piano in Minneapolis -- a well-cared for, privately-owned Imperial Bosendorfer Grand Piano with a sublime sound. It just needed a few days with the Bay Area Bosendorfer technician, Sean Skylark, and it blossomed into a world-class instrument.

I'm very pleased that this year we have the students of Jon Nakamatsu's studio returning for their second performance. Hailing from different parts of the world, these outstanding pianists at the San Francisco Conservatory are already quite accomplished with some having won various awards. We are delighted to give them performance experience in our community. Opportunities to perform for an appreciative but discerning audience are like finding stars in the daytime. I hope you will come to see and hear them shine!

We're also very happy to welcome back West Valley College's Concert Choir, under the direction of conductor Lou De La Rosa, for their annual spring performance. Three Christmases ago, Lou felt compelled to come to church on Christmas morning. Talking with him after the service, I found out that the music building at the college was about to be demolished and the Rector and I immediately invited the choir to perform at Saint Andrew's. Ho! Ho! Ho! Lou's choirs have toured and competed in the US and Europe, widely sharing their love of music and performing across genres and musical styles. Teaching for more than 40 years in the South Bay, Lou has inspired generations of students, nurturing and highlighting young singers in group settings and as soloists. It's always impressive to see which pieces they'll tackle, and it's a joy to be in the audience.

We hope you'll join us in support of these young musicians.

See you at the next concert,

Michael

About the Nakamastsu Studio: Jon Nakamatsu, internationally renowned pianist and faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, brings his students to Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church for this special recital, showcasing the artistic talents of the next generation. All will play on the church's Imperial Bosendorfer Grand Piano, known for its deep, resonant sound and projection in large spaces -- an instrument usually only available in concert halls. Students will perform a variety of selections in addition to a performance by Nakamatsu.

"For budding pianists, the most important thing is for them to have performance opportunities to hone their craft," says Nakamatsu. "It kind of transforms them into something more than just students and that's invaluable."

All donations graciously accepted at the door to support the concert.

The West Valley Concert Choir: One of two choirs in the Department of Music & Dance, the Concert Choir is the major ensemble for voice majors and is open by audition to non-majors as well. As they explore the canon of choral literature over the ages and across cultures, they often regularly join with The Winchester Orchestra to perform major choral/orchestral works. This concert also features special guests, including the West Valley College Chamber Singers.

Over the past several years they have performed such masterpieces as Handel Messiah, Bach Magnificat, Vivaldi Gloria, Mozart Coronation Mass, Mozart Requiem, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Ode to Joy, Schubert Mass in G, Mendelssohn Symphony No. 2 Hymn of Praise, Bruckner Te Deum, Gounod Messe Solennelle, Fauré Requiem, Duruflé Requiem, and Bernstein Chichester Psalms.

All students are free with ID. For general admission tickets requesting suggested donations ($10-$20), please click here.

The Fog City Singers: Established in 2015, the Fog City Singers are a tenor-bass chorus from San Francisco that specialize in barbershop music. Currently the Far Western District chorus champions of the Barbershop Harmony Society, Fog City also finished fourth at the 2025 International BHS Chorus Contest in Denver. In addition, they are known for singing a range of choral a cappella music, from classical motets to today's most contemporary arrangements. All of their music is memorized for performances in order to better connect with and deliver each composition.

This concert, Chasing Clarity, is a call to stretch our imagination, rediscover core values, and embrace meaningful, measured risks. Along the way, we find renewal and brightness and our purpose starts to come into focus; a little light can go a long way when the road ahead feels dim.

Don't miss a chance to see them in the South Bay! Early bird pricing until March 31st. Tickets at the door or for advance purchase - here's the link.

The Choral Project: Founded in 1996, this award-winning ensemble has wowed audiences with high-level choral literature, celebrating diverse traditions and pushing creative boundaries. Performing on prestigious stages worldwide, they have garnered critical acclaim for their technical excellence and emotionally compelling artistry.
