October happenings
(in roughly chronological order!!)
| | We hope you can join us for worship this Sunday, October 22 when new members will officially join the church. | | | Mandatory meeting for volunteers working with our children and youth |
All volunteers who work with our children and youth are asked to attend a meeting on Sunday, October 22 at 11:30 am in the Library. This will be a brief gathering to review all aspects of our children and youth programs. Questions? Contact Andrea Bullard at andrea@bccucc.org or 246- 0111 x107.
We'd love to have a few more volunteers so if others are interested in volunteering in Church School, or have questions, please contact our Faith Formation Director, Andrea Bullard, at andrea@bccucc.org or 246-0111 x 107. For volunteering with Youth Group, please contact Rev. Racquel Ray at racquel@bccucc.org or 246-0111 x 104. They look forward to hearing from you!
| | Remembering those who have died |
We invite you to submit the names of loved ones who have died since last All Saints Sunday (October 30, 2022) to the church office (246- 0111 or office@bccucc.org) by Tuesday, October 24. Their names will be read aloud with the tolling of a bell in the worship service on All Saints Sunday, October 29.
| | | Thanksgiving Food Drive for TapIn continues |
| |
BCCUCC and the Mission & Justice Team are again partnering with TAPIN to support their Thanksgiving food drive. Last year, our church provided 40 bags of food for this meaningful project. Those bags were used to help TAPIN feed over 700 families who needed assistance during the holiday! This year, the need has increased substantially.
On October 8, Shauna Hyde, President of TAPIN, shared a Moment of Mission about this year's Thanksgiving food drive and how our ministry helps TAPIN with their work.
We have brown paper bags (labeled with the Thanksgiving food list) still available on Sunday mornings for anyone who would like to pick one up. Simply take a bag, add the requested food to it (see below) and bring the filled bags back to church on Sundays, October 22, or 29. Bags are brought up during the Offertory or before the service begins, and will be blessed on Sunday, October 29 during the worship service. Bags will then be delivered to TAPIN on November 1 to fill their shelves well in advance of Thanksgiving.
| |
Thanksgiving Food List:
- Stuffing
- instant mashed potatoes
- gravy in cans
- cranberry sauce cans
- brownie
- cookie mixes
-
canned vegetables
Please: The items should be **regular size (not oversized) cans and boxes**
No glass jars please as several broke in transporting last year!

Our annual Trunk or Treat will be held after worship on Sunday, October 29 from 11:15am - 12:00pm. This is a community event and we would love for you to join us again this year to fill the front parking lot of the education building with festive cars, costumes, and treats. We’ve seen Mrs. Potts and Lumiere, a plague doctor, cookie monster along with milk and cookies, and fresh from the farm harvest themes. Any idea is welcome and you can decorate your vehicle's trunk as simply or elaborately as you like – this is not a competition!
There will be a sign-up sheet on the coffee table in Fellowship Hall for those who will be decorating their trunks, or contact Racquel at racquel@bccucc.org or 246-0111 x 104. We have 8 cars signed up so far and will need at least 2 more to match last year's total - and would love to have even more!
Organizer needed: Rev. Racquel would very much appreciate if a member of the congregation could organize us all! Contact racquel@bccucc.org to volunteer.
Anyone who would like to - young and old - is welcome to come to worship in costume that Sunday.
| | Stewardship Moment - Because of YOU, our church changes lives |
This week we find ourselves in the middle of our annual stewardship campaign. And while there are many ways to support the congregation, our annual campaign provides a chance to think in a particular and prayerful ways about the choices we make with our money in support of the church. In each bulletin and eBridge throughout the campaign we will include a different insert that discusses one aspect of our campaign. We hope you find them meaningful.
Our campaign will end on Consecration Sunday, November 12, with a wonderful celebration in church and a catered congregational lunch featuring the Bare Bones Big Band who previously joined us in worship on Open Doors Sunday, September 10. We hope you will join us on that day!
| | 'Understanding Transgender Identity: embracing all God's children' |
Sunday, November 5
11:30 am - 1 pm in the church library
The BCCUCC Open and Affirming Team has invited Quinten Foster, Director of Transgender Whole Healthcare at East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP), to come and speak with our congregation after worship on Sunday, November 5. This workshop will focus on understanding transgender identity in order to deepen our knowledge and understanding of this minority community and their personal experiences. encourage those present to ask relevant questions, inviting us to lean into some of the confusion or lack of clarity many of us may have on the issue. Our goal for the workshop is to provide a safe and healthy place where honest and compassionate dialogue can take place. All are invited to attend.
| | A note of thanks from Christine |

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at BCCUCC for the recognition during worship on October 8th of my 25 years of working at BCCUCC. Little did I know when I answered the small ad in the Barrington Times for a church secretary, that I'd become a member of staff here for such a long time. When I started (on Oct 8th, 1998) Hamilton Throckmorton was the senior minister, and Julie Kilmer was the associate. Since then I've worked with an additional four senior or interim senior ministers, and eight settled or interim associate ministers. If you're doing the math, that makes a total of 14 different ministers that have had to get used to my English accent and British sense of humour - not to mention some colourful spelling of words (when I forget to use the American spelling).
As many already know, I'm an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, and on Sunday mornings you can find me there singing in the choir - except for the occasional Sunday when I'm at BCCUCC as your substitute pianist. During the pandemic I joined the BCCUCC Virtual Choir and had the opportunity to make weekly video recordings of hymns and anthems that Erik Ela then expertly put together in time for Sunday's virtual worship service. It was a lot of work for all involved - especially Erik - but I enjoyed it, and it helped me stay connected to others while making music together (albeit virtually) during a time when we were all so isolated. I've been fortunate to meet and get to know many wonderful people at BCCUCC over the years, and I'm blessed to have two church families - BCCUCC and St. John's.
Thank you so much for the lovely basket of cyclamen plants and the generous financial gift you gave me, and for the cake at coffee hour. Together with the kind words spoken by Dale during the service, and from others at coffee hour, they all mean a lot to me. As I mentioned during the prayers, I give thanks to God that I work here at the church as it's been such a blessing in my life.
With many thanks,
Christine Wallis
Office Administrator (for 25 years and 11 days!)

Thank you to those who signed the Climate Hope Cards back in the summer. They have arrived in Washington D.C.! Ours were just a few of nearly 8,000 postcards delivered to the EPA as 'tangible prayer for hope' from UCC churches.
| | An opportunity to donate fresh fruit to TAPIN for Thanksgiving |
| |
For several years at BCCUCC we held a citrus fruit sale to raise money for mission trips. We partnered with the Providence Singers who have been running this sale as a fundraiser for their organization for more than 20 years! In addition to ordering fruit for themselves, the congregation was invited to order cases of fruit for delivery to TAPIN so it could be given away with the Thanksgiving Food Bags and Gift Cards to those in need in the East Bay.
Church member Beth Zarlengo is once again running the Fruit Sale Fundraiser for the Providence Singers and invites the congregation to also order fruit for delivery to TAPIN. Many of the Singers also purchase cases of fruit for delivery to TAPIN and they donate over 500 lbs each year! To order fruit for donation to TAPIN please visit www.FloridaIndianRiverGroves.com/ecommerce/723608 and choose ‘Ship to Organization’ then contact Beth at zarlengo@cox.net or (401) 447-6331 to let her know that your order is for TAPIN.
If you’re interested in ordering fruit for yourself or for delivery to someone else, please contact Christine Wallis (also a member of the Providence Singers) in the church office (office@bccucc.org or 246-0111) and she’ll be happy to help you with your order. If you live locally, she'll even deliver it to your door so you don't pay any shipping costs! Orders must be placed by Tuesday, October 24, and will be delivered the week before Thanksgiving. Thank you.

Do you have a friendly smile and are willing to welcome people to church on a Sunday morning? Then why not be a greeter! All that's required is that you come to worship early so you can greet the congregation as they arrive, being especially on the lookout to welcome any visitors. 'Greeter' nametags are kept in the drawer in the vestry sideboard and by wearing one, it identifies you to any visitors as someone there to offer assistance if needed.
Individuals, couples and families are all welcome to be greeters. To volunteer please contact Trinki Brueckner at trinki49@gmail.com or speak to her at coffee hour on a Sunday. Thank you.

All are invited to join us for our multi-platform worship service at 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings - either in person or online.
Masks are optional but we do ask that if you're feeling unwell or have symptoms, that you please stay home and watch online. We continue to run large HEPA air filters in the sanctuary and also have HEPA air filters in most spaces in our Education building.
For those unable to join us in person, the services are livestreamed so they can be watched online - either live or later - at

The Nursery is available every Sunday morning to provide loving care for infants and children aged 0 - 3 years old. Parents/guardians are welcome to drop off their child/children in the nursery located in the Education building before going to the worship service.
The Nursery Nook, located directly below the sanctuary, is another option for parents with wiggly children of any age to retreat to and still hear the service on the loud speaker down there.
We love the sound of children in worship so parents are welcome to keep their infants and children with them in the sanctuary if they wish. For those who would prefer to worship without distraction, we provide these other options.
