October happenings
(in roughly chronological order!!)
Join us for a jam-packed Sunday Celebration on Sunday, October 8!
There's a lot happening this Sunday, October 8 ....
  • It's an All Ages Worship Service.
  • We will be kicking off our Thanksgiving Food Drive for TapIn and will have a special Moment for Mission from their president.
  • We will be honoring Christine Wallis, our Office Administrator, for her 25 years of service to our church!
  • At the end of worship we’ll move outside for the Dedication of our Memorial Garden at the edge of the Education Building facing the water. It is a beautiful garden and we hope everyone will come outside for this special dedication.
We hope you can join us for worship this Sunday and look forward to seeing you.
Thanksgiving Food Drive for TapIn kicks off October 8
Once again, BCCUCC and the Mission & Justice Team are partnering with TAPIN to support their Thanksgiving food drive. Last year, BCCUCC provided 40 bags of food for this meaningful project. Those bags were used to help TAPIN feed over 700 families who needed assistance during the holiday! This year, the need has increased substantially.
Shauna Hyde, President of TAPIN will be joining us on Sunday, October 8 to share a Moment of Mission about this year's Thanksgiving food drive and how our ministry helps TAPIN with their work.
We have 100 brown paper bags (labeled with the Thanksgiving food list) to distribute to anyone who would like to contribute. Simply take a bag, add the requested food to it and bring the filled bags back to church on Sundays, October 15, 22, or 29. Bags will be brought up during the Offertory or before services begin and will be blessed on Sunday, October 29 during the worship service. Bags will then be delivered to TAPIN on November 1 to fill their shelves well in advance of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Food List:
  • Stuffing
  • instant mashed potatoes
  • gravy in cans
  • cranberry sauce cans
  • brownie
  • cookie mixes
  • canned vegetables
Please: The items should be **regular size (not oversized) cans and boxes**
No glass jars please as several broke in transporting last year!

5th Annual Barrington Day of Caring - it's not too late to volunteer!
Monday, October 9, 2023 (Indigenous Peoples Day)
Noon - 4 pm.

Barrington Day of Caring is a community-wide event for individuals, families, friends, or teams to come together as volunteers to help eligible residents in need through service projects. This event is a Town-supported program in connection with many community and faith organizations. No skill set is needed to volunteer. However, your expertise is welcomed. Flier with photos

To volunteer: Don't worry if you haven't yet registered - the deadline for registration is Thursday, October 5 and you can register online. BUT.... you can also register on the day - just be sure to arrive in plenty of time to fill out the paperwork!

On the day of the event, volunteers should arrive between 11 and 11:45 am to check in and/or complete registration. Volunteers will be divided into groups and depart from the Town Hall at noon to go to the various work sites. More information.

Rev. Dale Azevedo is one of the organizers of the event and encourages volunteers from BCCUCC to join him on Monday.

Hameho Garden Club hosts meeting in Fellowship Hall
Hameho Garden Club invites you to join them on Thursday, October 12 at 6:30 pm in Fellowship Hall for a presentation by Dr. Demers of Buxton Hollow Farm Natural Products, on the pros and cons of No-Dig Gardening. This open meeting will focus on an "easy on the body" method of gardening. All are welcome.
Questions? Contact Eileen Dennis edteazels@aol.com or (245-6296).

'Royalties for Negro Spirituals' offering
On Sunday, October 15, the Mission and Justice Team will invite the congregation to once again support our Royalties for Negro Spirituals initiative that was started last spring. The service will include a Negro spiritual hymn, and we recognize that the original creators of this music were never compensated for their work. To right this injustice, although in a small way, we hope you will consider a donation to Community Music Works in Providence. This organization's mission is to create a cohesive urban community through music education and performance that transforms the lives of children, families and musicians.
A special offering envelope will be included in that Sunday’s bulletin. Please make checks payable to 'BCCUCC' and write 'Royalties' in the memo line. Online donations may be made at www.bccucc.org/donation using the Tithe.ly link and selecting 'Royalties for Negro Spirituals'. Thank you.

Interested in becoming a member of our church?
On Sunday, October 15 at 11:30 am, Rev. Dale is holding a New Member Class for those who are interested in learning more about our church and officially joining BCCUCC. Childcare can be provided if requested ahead of time.
If you'd also like to attend the class please let us know a.s.a.p., and request childcare if needed. RSVP to Dale at dale@bccucc.org or 246- 0111 x 103.
Whether you’ve been attending for only a few weeks or you’ve been coming for years but never joined, you’re welcome to the class. Participation does not require you become a member, but for those who choose to, they’ll be joining during the worship service on New Member Sunday, October 22.

Mandatory meeting for volunteers working with our children and youth
All volunteers who work with our children and youth are asked to attend a meeting on Sunday, October 22 at 11:30 am in the Library. This will be a brief gathering to review all aspects of our children and youth programs. Questions? Contact Andrea Bullard at andrea@bccucc.org or 246- 0111 x107.

We'd love to have a few more volunteers so if others are interested in volunteering in Church School, or have questions, please contact our Faith Formation Director, Andrea Bullard, at andrea@bccucc.org or 246-0111 x 107. For volunteering with Youth Group, please contact Rev. Racquel Ray at racquel@bccucc.org or 246-0111 x 104. They look forward to hearing from you!

Remembering those who have died
We invite you to submit the names of loved ones who have died since last All Saints Sunday (October 30, 2022) to the church office (246- 0111 or office@bccucc.org) by Tuesday, October 24. Their names will be read aloud with the tolling of a bell in the worship service on All Saints Sunday, October 29.

Trunk or Treat 2023
Our annual Trunk or Treat will be held after worship on Sunday, October 29 from 11:15am - 12:00pm. This is a community event and we would love for you to join us again this year to fill the front parking lot of the education building with festive cars, costumes, and treats. We’ve seen Mrs. Potts and Lumiere, a plague doctor, cookie monster along with milk and cookies, and fresh from the farm harvest themes. Any idea is welcome and you can decorate your vehicle's trunk as simply or elaborately as you like – this is not a competition!
There will be a sign-up sheet on the coffee table in Fellowship Hall for those who will be decorating their trunks, or contact Racquel at racquel@bccucc.org or 246-0111 x 104. We have 4 cars signed up so far and will need at least 6 more to match last year's total - but would love to have even more!
Organizer needed: Rev. Racquel would very much appreciate if a member of the congregation could organize us all! Contact racquel@bccucc.org to volunteer.
Anyone who would like to - young and old - is welcome to come to worship in costume that Sunday.
An update on BCCUCC's new church structure
An update on BCCUCC's new church structure!
The GMTF (Governance Ministry Task Force) is very excited that the congregation unanimously approved moving forward with our proposed governance structure. Although the motion passed, we still have a lot of work ahead of us.

Over the coming months, the GMTF will be continuing to draft our new bylaws and working with church leaders to put together a slate of nominees. Both items will be presented and voted on at our budgetary meeting in January. We will also be working with the Finance Team to put together a budget for 2024 that will reflect our new organization.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we will also be working with many of our current teams to help them transition into our new model. This will involve clarifying what ministries will remain active (ie those ministries people care enough about to continue) and what new ministries will we need to embrace.

This leaves us with the questions every member should be asking themselves, “What ministries (old or new) are meaningful to me and what can I do to make them happen?” Feel free to let Dale, Racquel, or members of the GMTF know if there is a ministry you would like to support with your time and energy!

Opportunities
Interesting in paying for altar flowers some Sunday?
The vases of flowers are delivered from a local florist each week (The Greenery in Warren) and they’re paid for by specific donations from the congregation. Each vase costs $30 and donor(s) can choose to pay for one or both vases. The flowers can be given in memory, celebration or honor of a person or special event (anniversary, birthday etc) and your dedication will be included in the bulletin and also read during the service.
If you'd like to give either one or both vases of flowers some Sunday, please contact Beth Buckley, chair of the Chancel Team, at elizabethbuckley21@msn.com or (401) 524-0849.
Chancel Team would like more members
Do you enjoy working with flowers? Enjoy helping people celebrate anniversaries and commemorate loved ones? Then you would enjoy being on the Chancel Team. The time commitment is easy as our meetings are mostly by email or chatting at Coffee Hour.  Please contact Beth Buckley at Elizabethbuckley21@msn.com or (401) 524-0849, or look for Bethia Rosner, Liz Rosenholm, Barbara Lee or Beth at Coffee Hour to learn more.
Be a Greeter!
Do you have a friendly smile and are willing to welcome people to church on a Sunday morning? Then why not be a greeter! All that's required is that you come to worship early so you can greet the congregation as they arrive, being especially on the lookout to welcome any visitors. 'Greeter' nametags are kept in the drawer in the vestry sideboard and by wearing one, it identifies you to any visitors as someone there to offer assistance if needed.
Individuals, couples and families are all welcome to be greeters. To volunteer please contact Trinki Brueckner at trinki49@gmail.com or speak to her at coffee hour on a Sunday. Thank you.

An opportunity to donate fresh fruit to TAPIN for Thanksgiving
For several years at BCCUCC we held a citrus fruit sale to raise money for mission trips. We partnered with the Providence Singers who have been running this sale as a fundraiser for their organization for more than 20 years! In addition to ordering fruit for themselves, the congregation was invited to order cases of fruit for delivery to TAPIN so it could be given away with the Thanksgiving Food Bags and Gift Cards to those in need in the East Bay.
Church member Beth Zarlengo is once again running the Fruit Sale Fundraiser for the Providence Singers and invites the congregation to also order fruit for delivery to TAPIN. Many of the Singers also purchase cases of fruit for delivery to TAPIN and they donate over 500 lbs each year! To order fruit for donation to TAPIN please visit www.FloridaIndianRiverGroves.com/ecommerce/723608 and choose ‘Ship to Organization’ then contact Beth at zarlengo@cox.net or (401) 447-6331 to let her know that your order is for TAPIN.
If you’re interested in ordering fruit for yourself or for delivery to someone else, please contact Christine Wallis (also a member of the Providence Singers) in the church office (office@bccucc.org or 246-0111) and she’ll be happy to help you with your order. If you live locally, she'll even deliver it to your door so you don't pay any shipping costs! Orders must be placed by Tuesday, October 24, and will be delivered the week before Thanksgiving. Thank you.
TAPIN has extended its hours
In addition to being open Monday - Friday, 9 am - Noon, TAPIN is also now open on Thursday evenings from 4 - 7 pm. These new hours provide more time for clients to go for assistance, and also provides more donation and volunteer opportunities!
Learn more about TAPIN including the services it provides and how to volunteer.

Nursery Care
The Nursery is available every Sunday morning to provide loving care for infants and children aged 0 - 3 years old. Parents/guardians are welcome to drop off their child/children in the nursery located in the Education building before going to the worship service.
The Nursery Nook, located directly below the sanctuary, is another option for parents with wiggly children of any age to retreat to and still hear the service on the loud speaker down there.
We love the sound of children in worship so parents are welcome to keep their infants and children with them in the sanctuary if they wish. For those who would prefer to worship without distraction, we provide these other options.
