On Monday evening, Buddhist teacher, scholar, and good friend of our community, Andy Karr, will be joining us to explore the "two faces of delusion." In particular, Andy will guide us in the extremely important practice of analytic meditation. Through this practice, we begin to ascertain the true nature of oneself and the world around us. The wisdom derived from this analysis frees us from the confusion that keeps us wandering in samsara.

Andy is the author of three wonderful books, Contemplating Reality, The Practice of Contemplative Photography, and his most recent, Into the Mirror.

Please join in for what promises to be a most enlightening evening!

All are welcome to come at 6:15 for tea and conversation.

Here is the recording of last week's teaching.

From a Buddhist perspective, it’s important to understand that meditation’s impact on worldly performance and mental well-being are merely side effects. They might be beneficial side effects, but chasing after them will distract you from the main point. The purpose of the path is not to make you more comfortable or happier, though contentment, acceptance, and well-being are healthy, natural byproducts of practice. Meditation’s ultimate purpose—toward which this training is directed—is to eliminate suffering at its root by overcoming delusion, and then using the wisdom and freedom that comes from that to help others overcome their delusion.

Contemplation of the Week - Living with Integrity

In the weeks to come, take a few minutes when you wake up, or at the beginning of your session of practice, to bring to mind the “four powers of confession.” Look over the past weeks or months and recall whatever you may have done or said that may have caused harm to yourself or to others, or wasn’t in line with your own aspirations. This is the first of the four powers, Recognition. Next, arouse a sense of healthy Regret for what we have done. Then determine a Remedial Action that will help you move forward and heal whatever needs to be healed. This could simply call you to apologize to whomever you may have harmed, or to commit to increasing your meditation practice and study. Finally, arouse a determination, or Resolve, to not fall into those patterns of behavior again and to be in the world in a way that is aligned with your most virtuous aspirations.
