Greetings,

This week, we are especially thankful. Many in this community are grateful for the opportunity to do work we love that serves a larger purpose.

On Giving Tuesday, November 28, you can help the next generation of LawCats to have that opportunity as well. Read below to learn about the Huerta Scholarship, current scholar Kaylee Sharp Bauer, and how you can support Native students at the University of Arizona Law.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

On #GivingTuesday, Invest in the Success of Indigenous Law Students

University of Arizona Law and the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy (IPLP) Program are preparing for another successful #GivingTuesday Huerta Scholarship campaign. Please support the next generation of Indigenous lawyers attending University of Arizona Law by donating to the Huerta Scholarship.

The Huerta Scholarship

The Huerta Scholarship was established in 2014 in honor of Judge Lawrence Huerta. Judge Huerta, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, was the first Native American to graduate from University of Arizona Law (class of ’53) and be licensed to practice law in Arizona.

The Huerta Scholarship provides vital support to Indigenous law students attending the University of Arizona College of Law. Indigenous students can realize their dreams of attending law school thanks to the support of Huerta Scholarship donors like you!

Thanks to the generosity of the Melody S. Robidoux Foundation Fund held at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, your donations will be doubled November 27 through December 1, up to $5,000 total, for our double matching gift challenge. Double the impact of your gift by participating in our matching gift challenge!

Support the next generation of Indigenous lawyers like Kaylee by donating to the Huerta Scholarship.

Scholarships at University of Arizona Law

Arizona maintains one of the lowest law school tuition rates in the country, and each year roughly 92% of JD students receive scholarships. For more information on how to get involved with the University of Arizona Law’s scholarship program, contact Senior Director of Development Megan O’Leary at moleary@email.arizona.edu or give directly through the link below.

We have so much to be thankful for – and that includes all of the current members of our College, deeply engaged alumni including all of the members of the all-LawCat Tucson firm of Schmidt, Sethi & Akmajian, all of the readers of Wildcat Wednesday – Letter of the Law, and everyone, alumni and friends alike, who support our students, our faculty and our College.

Our Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program models excellence – excellence in our students, excellence in deep education, excellence in research and policy, and excellence in external engagement. That spirit was embodied in Judge Huerta, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 97. Please join me in supporting the Huerta Scholarship on Giving Tuesday.

Warmly,
