Pastor's Musing

Compassion is moving from sympathy to action. The Japanese refer to this concern as "handing out your heart." This might take the form of a helping hand or a financial donation. You might send a letter or email, make a phone call, or even share a smile.

Often translated as beauty, the Hebrew word tiferet actually refers to the capacity to perceive beauty in others, particularly those who are unlike you. It’s not the object but the source, and the source of tiferet is faith that "you are all painted—skillfully, I might add—with the same brush.” (Rabbi Irwin Keller)

Have compassion. Hand out your heart to the beauty around you: your

neighbors, whether they live in the Middle East, western North Carolina, or on your street; songbirds, including those rascal blue jays; the small lizard

who sneaked into the church, the little guy that I have safely carried back outside. After all, I would like a helping hand whenever I am at a loss.

In Hope,

Andrew

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY

This Sunday, October 6

This Sunday is The Peace and Global Witness Offering is an annual offering that we will collect for on World Communion Day. This offering gives us the opportunity to not only extend the peace of Christ to each other, but to extend the hand of peace to others in our community, region, and around the world.

PCUSA's Presbyterian Mission Agency retains 50% percent of the offerings for global efforts such as aiding displaced migrants in the Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala). Twenty five percent is used by the Presbytery for peacemaking projects in our region and CITP retains 25% for local efforts.

The Mission and Service Committee has designated Community Organizing for Racial Equity (CORE) and Communities in Schools to receive the local portion of the offering. This Sunday the Minute for Mission will contain information on the amazing work these organizations do in our community.

Please think and consider praying about donating to the Peace and Global Witness Offering THIS Sunday.

Friends at Chapel in the Pines,

THANK YOU so much for the support, prayers and donations so far to the relief efforts in Asheville, NC. While impacted, I have been far more fortunate than others.

The most important things needed right now in Asheville are water, cash, and gas.

WATER - No one on city water has potable water. Water distribution areas are becoming more prevalent, but people need gas in their vehicle to get to them.

CASH - There is no internet - and very spotty mobile service, so residents cannot get cash via ATMs, or pay with credit card anywhere.

GAS - Each family needs gas to escape the area.

I intend to deliver care packages as often as I can over the next few weeks, to as many households as possible. Please consider helping by providing me with:

  • empty five-gallon gas cans
  • cash (must be handed directly to Mary Donna)
  • one-gallon jugs of water

If you can help with any of the needs in this letter or have questions, please contact Mary Donna Pond at mdpond@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Shelley Nielsen (Mary Donna Pond’s daughter)

We WELCOME all people into our community of of faith.

We WORSHIP God with gratitude

for the grace given to all people

through Jesus Christ.

We WITNESS the love of Christ through our gifts of time, talents, and resources as we grow together in our faith.

CITP's Annual Church Work Day/ Remembrance Garden News: The upcoming October 26 church workday (November 7 rain date) will be for major replanting in our Remembrance Garden. Over the years, our Remembrance Garden has become overgrown to the point where its original design has become obscured and it is difficult to maintain. We have developed a plan to restore it while being sympathetic to its beauty and purpose. As part of these restoration efforts, we will need to remove overgrown plants a few weeks before the work day. During this time, the Garden will look disturbed. Please be patient with us, and come out to help with the replanting and mulching on October 26!

Michael Vazquez, Ph.D, Teaching Assistant Professor, Philosophy Department and Director of Outreach, Parr Center for Ethics, UNC-Chapel Hill, will present a lecture entitled:

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Dilemmas

Professor Vazquez says:

"Join us for Ancient Wisdom, Modern Dilemmas, where the timeless ideas of philosophers like Socrates and the Stoics meet today’s ethical challenges. Can ancient ideas about happiness help us navigate modern anxieties and the pressures of success? Can lying be justified for the greater good? What do we owe to other people, and distant strangers? This session will offer accessible, thought-provoking reflections on questions that continue to shape our lives—no philosophy background required. All you need is curiosity and a desire to think deeply about the moral puzzles that we face today."

UPDATED! This year for the Season of Creation we have begun putting together a "Forest of Stories", September 1 - October 1. You're invited to write a few sentences, or a poem, or draw a sketch -- of a tree that's been special in your life. It could be words about a tree that you climbed when you were young, a tree in your backyard, a tree which gave you sweet fruit, a tree that provided lush cool shade on a hot day. Look for paper and pens in the narthex. Also a box for collecting our stories. We will share our stories throughout the Season of Creation. Below is a sampling of the stories we have received.

CITP has recently moved to using volunteers to stream our 11am Sunday morning worship services and our combined 10am Sunday morning services on the second Sunday of each month.

Brett Stegall has done a wonderful job for the past several weeks, but we need a group of six to eight people who can take turns providing this service. You don't have to be a technology whiz (or anything NEAR being a technology whiz) to do this. We hope to have enough volunteers to have two people per Sunday to help each other out.

This is a wonderful way to learn a new skill, impress your friends AND help provide worship opportunities for those who can not be at church in person.

Please prayerfully consider this need! For more information, contact Tom Crosby, Nancy Donny, the church office, or any member of the Communications Committee. Folks who can't get to worship in person on Sunday will be very thankful for your help!

Join us at the Belted Goat on Mondays at 1pm for fellowship with Andrew!
