Electronic Waste? Recycle It!

Let's take action to positively impact our community and environment by reducing the amount of e-waste in our landfills. E-waste materials, including computer monitors, cell phones, microwaves, TVs, and light bulbs, contain hazardous elements like lead, cadmium, and mercury, which can harm both humans and the environment.

We need your help to protect our community and environment from the harmful effects of e-waste.

The Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Program is available by appointment only. Learn more at https://hhw.sccgov.org/home.

To find approved e-waste drop-off locations, visit https://www2.calrecycle.ca.gov/electronics/eRecycle.

Recology South Valley Gilroy is another option for e-waste collection. Call 408-842-3358 or visit https://www.recology.com/recology-south-valley/gilroy/bulky-items/.

Let's work together to make a positive impact on our environment by properly disposing of e-waste materials.

Ask Gilroy: Your City, Your Questions!

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions this week!

We've provided answers to some of the questions below, and look forward to more questions this week!

Responses provided by City Administrator Jimmy Forbis:

❓Does the City have plans to extend the paved pedestrian path from Kern Ave near Tatum Ave along the storm channel levee to Day Road and Christopher HS? It would be amazing to have these car free paths interconnected with each other such as the levee path through Christmas Hill Park and the Sixth St one along the 101 be connected with the one mentioned above perhaps via Miller Sough.

Yes, the City does have plans to pave and connect those pathways. The project, which comprises two segments from Kern to Day Road and from Santa Teresa to Tapestry, is being finalized at this time. The City received a federal earmark of $1.5 million and a $200,000 Recreational Trails Grant to develop this project. The City’s Engineering Division is currently working on designing the project to obtain the pathway within this funding amount, and the City is working with the Santa Clara Valley Water District, who owns those paths, to enter into an agreement to allow the public to use them as official bicycle and pedestrian walking paths.

❓Is the freeway traffic light on Leavesley Rd heading south on 101 that connects to that intersection treated as a regular traffic light? I see folks treating the red light different ways by either fully stopping until green, stopping like a stop sign, yielding or completely ignoring.

Eastbound motorists on Leavesley Road can make a right-turn on red onto the southbound US 101 on-ramp after stopping at the signalized crossing to yield for pedestrians that may be crossing, then stopping again for the purpose of yielding to southbound through traffic traveling on the ramp. In other words, the two red signals on the eastbound right-turn movement onto the southbound US 101 on-ramp act as stop signs.

❓Will the city consider marketing in other cities (i.e. San Jose, San Francisco, LA) to attract more people to generate revenue and "buzz" about our community? If so, how would it be done?

The City of Gilroy actively works with our partners, Visit Gilroy and the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, to promote Gilroy. Most recently, we have embarked on a year-long marketing campaign in the San Jose Mercury News, highlighting the breweries and taprooms, wineries, retail, and recreation. Also in partnership with the Gilroy Chamber and Gilroy Economic Development Corporation, we have been working with the Retail Coach to actively highlight retail properties available for lease or sale. The Retail Coach has been promoting Gilroy across the nation, including most recently at the ICSC Las Vegas conference.

On an ongoing basis, the city has a partnership agreement with Visit Gilroy, a non-profit Destination Marketing Organization dedicated to promoting Gilroy as a visitor destination. They actively boost social media posts (Facebook and Instagram) to areas outside of Gilroy. The region is typically San Jose over to Stockton and down the Central Valley sometimes as far as Fresno. Visit Gilroy also promotes Gilroy at various conferences, including the Bay Area Travel and Adventure Show: https://travelshows.com/shows/san-francisco-bay-area/

As California is one of the world’s most popular tourist destination, the Central Coast which starts in Ventura and goes to Morgan Hill, is the most visited region in California. Visit Gilroy partners with the Central Coast Tourism Council (https://centralcoast-tourism.com/) and place ads in tourist maps. They also have Gilroy rack cards being distributed to tourist destinations in San Jose and coastal areas.

❓Are there plans to have an off-ramp connecting 25, 101 to Santa Teresa? If yes, what is the timing?

(Correction) – The Santa Teresa extension to CA 25 and US 101 is part of Phase II (not Phase I) and is not funded at this time. Phase I of the project is the construction of the new off-ramp and bridge connecting CA and US 101, and it is funded.
