Did You Feel It? April is Earthquake Preparedness Month

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, Gilroy experienced an earthquake. Did you feel it? It was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake centered about 20 miles from here.

And the irony isn't lost on us. April is Earthquake Preparedness Month.

When it comes to earthquakes, it's not a matter of if another one will occur, but when. With this in mind, we're encouraging Gilroy residents to review and update their emergency plans.

Residents may also want to consider downloading MyShakeApp, a free app available from Google Play and the Apple App Store, that provides earthquake warnings and resources.

For more information about earthquake safety and preparedness, visit earthquake.ca.gov.

30-Day Public Comment Period

The DRAFT Annual Action Plan for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) programs is now available for public review and comment.

CDBG program funds are designed to support community development activities to build stronger and more resilient communities, particularly for low and moderate-income persons and communities. Grant funding is awarded to communities or grantees for a wide range of activities directed toward revitalizing neighborhoods, economic development and providing improved community facilities and services.

As a CDBG grantee community, the City of Gilroy utilizes its allocation in a variety of ways to assist low and moderate-income City residents and community programs.

The City of Gilroy invites the community to review and comment on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023-2024 Draft Annual Action Plan during the 30-day public comment period, April 1, 2023 through April 30, 2023. Written comments on the draft document must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 30, 2023 and can be emailed to Sandra.nava@cityofgilroy.org.

The City Council will also accept public comments on the Draft FY 2023-2024 Annual Action Plan at the May 1, 2023 Public Hearing and will provide direction on funding allocations for the proposed Fiscal Year 2023-2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) programs.

Share Your Input About Parking in the Downtown

Successful management of parking in downtown Gilroy contributes to a prosperous and vibrant downtown.

That's why the City of Gilroy has embarked on the process of developing a Downtown Parking Management Plan (DPMP).

The goal of the plan, once complete, is to provide easier access to parking and to foster continued economic development in the downtown.

We've met with downtown businesses and organizational partners and even held a community meeting. But now we'd like to hear from you, the community. Please consider sharing your experience and feedback regarding parking in Gilroy's historic downtown through an online survey.

To take the survey, visit this link and use participant code 2789930.

And for more information about the Downtown Parking Management Plan, please visit the City's website.

Don't Toss It! Recycle It!

More than 75% of a mattress can be recycled. The steel, foam, fibers, and wood are turned into everyday products like carpet padding, industrial filters, construction rebar, and garden mulch.

Bye Bye Mattress provides recycling services for foam and innerspring mattresses, futon mattresses that can separate from the futon frame or base, as well as box springs.

Mattress recycling locations are available throughout the Bay Area, including a new location in Morgan Hill. So the next time you have a mattress to get rid of, don't toss it! Recycle it!
