Community Announcements

Gas Powered Leaf Blowers Prohibited Starting July 1, 2024

In response to residents’ concerns and timed to the State banning the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers, the City Council adopted an amendment to the existing noise ordinance to ban the use of gas-powered leaf blowers in Town. The regulations related to noise and gas-powered leaf blowers are:

  • No person shall operate any gas-powered leaf blower after July 1, 2024.
  • Allowed time of use for electric or battery-powered leaf blowers:
  • Monday through Friday, between 8 am and 5 pm
  • Saturday, between 10 am and 5 pm
  • Violations of the Town’s noise ordinance with respect to the operation of residential powered gardening devices shall be an infraction, issued to either the homeowner or contractor. Every violation determined to be an infraction shall be punishable by (1) a fine not exceeding one hundred dollars for a first violation; (2) a fine not exceeding two hundred dollars for a second violation of the same ordinance within one year; and (3) a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars for each additional violation of the same ordinance within one year, or the maximum penalty allowed by law for any or all such violations.

After July 1st, if you see or hear someone using a gas-powered leaf blower, please report it right away to the non-emergency police line at (650) 375-7470.

Firewise Tip: Clear Grasses and Broom

Due to the recent rains and the intense warm up that followed a major plant growth spurt occurred. The scotch broom, grasses and thistles particularly in many parts of Hillsborough flourished.

Now the fire season is upon us thus the grasses and broom need to be cleared and put in the green bins as soon as possible.

Join the Hillsborough Youth Commission

The Town of Hillsborough has created a youth commission to provide teens with a platform to share concerns on broad issues of interest to the youth in the Hillsborough community. The Town is looking for 8-10 Hillsborough students entering 9-12 grade to join the Youth Commission. Applicants must be residents of the Town of Hillsborough in order to be on the Youth Commission.

SMC Green Teams Celebration 2024

RethinkWaste is hosting an end-of-the-year bash for all green teams from schools located around the County as well as their families, friends, and teachers. There will be food, games, crafts, prizes, and a chance to learn about the important work green teams have been doing at their schools. We hope we can use this space and time to celebrate collective achievements and share our gratitude for the efforts of students and their green team leaders. Our partners at San Mateo County's Department of Sustainability and Office of Education will also be participating.

There is no-cost to attend and all ages are welcome. All participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
