Holiday Burglary Prevention Tips from HPD
As we approach the holiday season, we've seen an uptick in burglaries within our town. Burglars are taking advantage of the fact that residents may be away on vacation, leaving their homes vacant. Furthermore, the earlier onset of darkness provides an opportune environment for these incidents.
In recent cases, burglars have been gaining access by scaling second-story levels and breaking glass windows. Your safety remains our top priority, and we're actively addressing this concerning trend.
To fortify your home's security, consider the following steps:
-
Be Watchful: Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately. Your prompt action can help prevent further incidents.
-
Community Unity: Strengthen neighborhood bonds and stay connected with your neighbors. Look out for each other's homes and share security concerns.
-
Alarm Systems and Videos Alerts: Make it a habit to arm your home security system regularly. Consider adding glass break sensors, especially to larger windows or glass panels leading directly to bedrooms. These sensors can instantly detect and alert you to unauthorized entries. Install video cameras at your front door and around your property. Set up those cameras to alert you when activated.
Create the impression of an occupied house:
-
Package Deliveries: Avoid ordering numerous packages if you'll be away for an extended period. Uncollected packages can indicate an empty home. Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to collect your packages and/or newspapers while you're away.
-
Enhanced Lighting: Adequate outdoor and indoor lighting can dissuade burglars. Install motion-sensor lights around your property.
