Update on Residential Burglaries

In 2023, the Hillsborough Police Department (HPD) has investigated an increase in residential burglaries that have occurred in various parts of Hillsborough. There is no specific area or neighborhood that is being targeted.

In many cases, the time frame in which the crime occurred ranged from multiple days to many hours (if the home was not alarmed and the homeowners were away). In some cases, losses were avoided or very limited due to residential alarm systems or camera activations. The most common method of entry is rear window/sliding door smashes. We have seen an increase in evening time burglary activity, especially from THURSDAY to SUNDAY (presumably in the hopes that a homeowner is out of the house or out of town).

In recent months, HPD, along with allied law enforcement agencies in our region, have seen an increase in residential burglary activity. We are working with our partners at the federal, state, and local levels on numerous investigations that involve various criminal groups. As a result of these multi-agency investigations, prosecution efforts are underway on a number of our burglary cases that have occurred over the previous years. We continue to leverage our combined efforts with our law enforcement partners and utilize all available technology to identify and arrest those responsible for burglaries committed in Hillsborough and throughout our region.

HPD strongly encourages the use of residential burglar alarm and surveillance systems. If you have a residential alarm system, we also recommend motion sensors on both levels of the home and please consider placing one in the master bedroom. Most alarm systems will have both home and away modes allowing you to deactivate the motion sensors when you are home.

Please make your home appear to be occupied when you are out of town or out for the evening. Leaving lights on, or on a timer, as well as leaving televisions on are encouraged. Please have a trusted person routinely check on your home while on vacation and do not forget to have your packages re-directed and any newspaper deliveries paused.

HPD maintains a VACATION WATCH list where our officers will perform passing checks periodically of your home. To be added to our vacation watch list, please call or email us through the contact information below, or visit our website at www.hillsborough.net/police.

HPD is actively conducting directed enforcement efforts for the purposes of burglary suppression based on known intelligence. Burglary suppression efforts involve marked patrol, unmarked patrol, targeted surveillance, license plate reading technology, and other investigatory means.

Please report suspicious activity right away to our Communications Center at 650-375-7470 and dial 9-1-1 for crimes in progress. We also offer free home security evaluations by appointment with our Crime Prevention Specialists. To schedule an appointment, call 650-375-7470.

Central County Fire Department

Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Program Update

The Town of Hillsborough and Central County Fire are appreciative of all the vegetation management work being done by residents. Providing defensible space around homes will greatly reduce the risks to our communities in the event of a wildland fire.

CCFD will begin inspections of the Northern portion of town (North of Hayne Road) in February. Watch for letters to arrive in the mail with instructions on how to schedule an appointment. If you receive a scheduling letter, you are required to have an inspection this year.

Inspectors may also stop by your home to request an inspection or assist you in scheduling an inspection at a time more convenient for you. Inspectors will be dressed in a fire department uniform or a fire department polo shirt with ID on a lanyard. Inspectors will also answer any of your fire safety questions and give recommendations on ways you can improve the fire safety on your property.  For more information visit the Town of Hillsborough WUI Program page (ccfd.org).
