Many Peninsula residents were awakened Tuesday morning by a 3.5 earthquake centered in Pacifica with a couple of smaller aftershocks a few minutes later. Although it was far from "The Big One" that has been talked about for decades, Tuesday's small tremors were a good reminder to always ensure that you and your family are prepared for earthquakes and other natural disasters as they can happen at any time. Here are some websites and resources to help you prepare:
Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety
The Earthquake Country Alliance recommends seven steps to staying safe before, during and after an earthquake.
Prepare and Maintain Go Bags
When a natural disaster strikes, there usually won't be enough time to gather all the supplies you will need. Keep Go Bags ready and in a reachable place and check them periodically to make sure everything is in working order and not expired.
Zonehaven
San Mateo County utilizes Zonehaven for tracking of natural disasters like wildfires and earthquakes. During an event, the map will show real-time updates for each zone like evacuation and sheltering orders.
Get Involved with CERT
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area, and trains them in basic disaster response skills.
Get Involved with HNN
Hillsborough Neighborhood Network (HNN) is a group of residents collaborating to organize neighborhoods for emergency preparedness at the individual, neighborhood, and community levels. There are Town-wide events and local neighborhood block parties scheduled throughout the year.
