Hello Nune,

As we embrace the spirit of spring, April brings with it a special opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation. This month, we're celebrating National Volunteer Month, highlighting the incredible contributions of individuals like Steve Geissler, whose dedication and passion have made a lasting impact on our mission to empower Greater Price Hill families.

On April 24, we'll be celebrating Administrative Professionals Day, a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of these amazing staff members:

  • Natalie Cokl, Workforce Development Office Coordinator
  • Karen Goins, Business Assistant
  • Gina Hornback, Early Childhood Administrative Assistant
  • Nancy Laird, Youth Development Program Administrative Assistant
  • Jazmín Nunez, Bilingual Office Coordinator

To top things off, Jazmín is also in the Santa Maria Spotlight for April. Her journey from program participant in Every Child Succeeds to a valued member of our team exemplifies the impact of Santa Maria's programs.

In addition to these celebrations, we're excited to share a story about the PatchWORK Project led by local artist Sarah Rodriguez. This inspiring initiative, which brought art-making directly to our community members, beautifully embodies the diversity and vibrancy of our West Side neighborhood.

As we reflect on the achievements and contributions of our community heroes, we invite you to join us in continuing to support Santa Maria's programs. Your generosity allows us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Greater Price Hill families, bringing people together, and empowering individuals to reach their full potential.

Together, let's create a brighter future for all!

Warm regards,

From Retiree to Super Volunteer!

As we celebrate National Volunteer Month in April, let's give a big shoutout to Steve Giessler, a super volunteer whose love for Cincinnati runs deep. After retiring, Steve turned his handy skills towards making a big difference at Santa Maria. He's a wizard with anything that needs fixing—from a wobbly door to a patch of drywall needing some love. His journey of giving back is not just about the tasks, though; it's the heart and smiles he brings that light up our buildings.

Between running marathons and walking miles, Steve and his wife Linda demonstrate what dedication looks like. Born and raised on the west side, the couple recently moved closer to family, but that didn't slow them down; it just gave Steve more reasons to dive into community service, especially at Santa Maria.

Steve's knack for repairs and his ever-ready smile have made him a favorite at Santa Maria. Whether it's finding the right paint color, or just being a friendly face, he's shown us the beauty of working together and helping families thrive. Our staff can't help but feel a bit brighter when Steve's around, proving every day how one person's efforts can ripple through a community. Santa Maria Youth Development Education Facilitator Amelia O'Donnell said, "Steve goes above and beyond what we ask! He is always finding things to fix that we either didn't know needed to be fixed or didn't know were able to be fixed. He always does everything with a smile on his face!"

As we celebrate Steve and all our volunteers this month, we're reminded of the incredible difference one person can make. Thanks to Steve and every volunteer this month, for all the warmth and dedication you bring to our family at Santa Maria.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! You will be able to read Steve's entire story in our 2023 Impact Report that should be hitting your mailbox this summer! Stay tuned!

PatchWORK Art Project

Local artist Sarah Rodriguez Art recently brought her incredible talent to Santa Maria Community Services, where she embarked on a project that beautifully embodies the essence of our vibrant West Side neighborhoods.

In March, Sarah hosted two PatchWORK workshops. The first was at the Joe Williams Family Center, collaborating with our Santa Maria Youth Development participants, and the second was at our East Price Hill Family Center with our Spanish-speaking Women's Group participants and their children. This collaborative effort showcased the power of art in fostering connections and celebrating the diversity of Price Hill. Participants engaged in creating vibrant collages using pre-painted paper, reflecting their cherished memories, favorite spots, and the unique essence of our neighborhood. One participant in each workshop even used Santa Maria as their favorite place!

As a West Side artist and recipient of ArtsWave's 2024 Black and Brown Artist Grant, Sarah's work brings joy, inspiration, and a sense of belonging to our community. We are honored to have partnered with her on this impactful project, eagerly anticipating the beautiful tapestry that will emerge, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of our beloved West Side.
