Rutgers Cancer Institute Once Again Receives New Jersey’s Highest Score in Cancer Specialty   

In the 2023-2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals survey, Rutgers Cancer Institute, the only program in the state designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) together with RWJBarnabas Health, has received the highest score in New Jersey in the Adult Specialty category for cancer, earning a High Performing rating. Only 93 cancer programs nationwide achieved this rating. Additionally, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has been recognized as one of the top five hospitals in New Jersey.  Learn More.

First Patient Treated with Manufactured T-Cells Created In-house at Rutgers Cancer Institute 

Recently, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey treated its first patient using genetically modified T-cells that were manufactured in its own state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) facility, a fully commissioned clean space for manufacturing of viral vectors and cell products for human administration. Christian Hinrichs, MD, chief of Cancer Immunotherapy and co-director of the Duncan and Nancy MacMillan Cancer Immunology and Metabolism Center of Excellence at Rutgers Cancer Institute, pioneered the use of immune cells generated from a patient’s tumor for the treatment of head and neck cancers, cervical cancer, and anal cancer, and is leading the study targeting common solid tumors with a novel receptor technology developed in his laboratory.  Read More

$1.5M from New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research Awarded to Rutgers Cancer Institute Researchers 

Pilot awards, pre-doctoral fellowship awards and post-doctoral awards totaling $1.5 million were recently awarded to Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey investigators by the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research (NJCCR). As New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center together with RWJBarnabas Health, Rutgers Cancer Institute investigators conduct high-impact research that advances the prevention and treatment of cancer. Child Psychologist Explains Misconceptions in Cancer Pain 

Chronic pain is a complex condition that has physical, psychological and social consequences, and many children with diseases like cancer may experience chronic pain. There are many misconceptions or misbeliefs about pain in children regarding medication or if the child exaggerating.
