Waste to Art Winners: What happens when you give creative, passionate people pipettes, aluminum soda cans, hospital gowns and other waste destined to rot? You get the 2024 UCSF Waste to Art challenge, a contest designed to combine art, sustainability and waste reduction. This year, judges and the public voted on 16 pieces displayed at the Millberry Union and three entries came out on top. See the winners »

The Nurses Who Changed Patient Care in the AIDS Crisis: In the early days of the AIDS epidemic, nurses played a crucial role in forever transforming health care. Cliff Morrison, RN, MSM, MSN, ACRN, FAAN, was the nurse who launched the country's first in-patient AIDS unit in 1983. He joined Carol Dawson-Rose, PhD, RN, FAAN, newly-named dean of the UCSF School of Nursing, associate vice chancellor of Nursing Affairs and an early leader in international patient-centered AIDS prevention and care, to share their experiences about providing care during the crisis. Ultra-Low Freezer Rebate: The UCSF Office of Sustainability is providing a rebate of $10,000 for replacing old inefficient ULT freezers with Energy Star-certified models. This policy is motivated by UCSF’s commitment to ongoing research infrastructure improvements and by a University of California-wide commitment to reduce energy use at each campus location. Modern freezers are up to 25% more space efficient and use only 30% of the energy of older freezers. The rebate is open to all UCSF principal investigators. Take advantage of the rebate »
