Jesus told his disciples, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." Matthew 16:24 NRSV
During the Lenten Season one of our focuses is on the cross and the cost of following Jesus as a disciple. The apostle Paul called the message of the cross, "The power of God" (I Corinthians 1:18). He meant that the cross, the most famous symbol in the world, is more than just a symbol. It is literally "the power of God" to "save those who believe" (vs.21). And they demonstrate that salvation by their changed lives.
What are the golden nuggets of the vertical and horizontal beams of the cross? I'm glad you asked. (lol) The vertical beam of the cross represents God's intentional and purposeful connection with His creation linking heaven to earth and God to us. The vertical relationship with God is made available to us by the birth, life teachings, ministry, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. The horizontal beam of the cross represents the great commission of Christ to the Church and Christians everywhere and through all times to make connections with other people in the name and ministry of Christ through word and deed.
The hymn writer got it right:
When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of Glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
I'm looking forward to seeing you in Church on Sunday when my sermon is entitled "Jesus’ Love for Children" based on Matthew 19:13-15 MSG. Remember, People come to Church and to Christ because people invite them. A great opportunity is Sunday.
For the Cause of the Cross,
Dr. Kevin M. James, Sr.
P.S. Remember you and your family members and friends are cordially invited to our special Wednesday evening Lenten worship experience this tonight at 6 p.m.
