Washington Welcomes Coupeville as
State’s Newest Certified Creative District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 10, 2024
On November 7, the ArtsWA Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to certify Coupeville as Washington’s 19th Creative District. Nestled in the heart of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve on Whidbey Island and home to the historic Coupeville Wharf, Coupeville has deep indigenous roots going back 9,000 years.
Coupeville offers a mix of cultural, historical, and natural attractions. It has charming Victorian homes and a historic waterfront, including a wharf that shows off its maritime history. Visitors can check out the local art gallery, which features works by local artists, and enjoy meals at restaurants that use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
“We feel Coupeville is uniquely qualified to be a Creative District based on the number of creatives who live and thrive here,” said Lisa Bernhardt, Co-Chair of the CCD Steering Committee and Executive Director of the Pacific NorthWest Art School. “We invite everyone to experience Coupeville’s unparalleled beauty and deep Indigenous and pioneer history that is apparent around every corner.”
Coupeville hosts several annual events, such as the Water Festival with Indigenous canoe races, food, storytelling, and music; the Arts & Crafts Festival; Mussel Fest, which celebrates locally grown mussels; and a Plein Air Painting Competition. The town is also home to a respected art school that attracts faculty and students from across the country. For history buffs, the local museum offers a look into the area's past, making Coupeville an appealing destination for both art and history lovers.
“Every Creative District has its own history and character, but they all have one thing in common—a strong ecosystem of creative professionals with community support,” said Creative Districts Manager Annette Roth. “This certification recognizes Coupeville’s dedication to a vibrant future.”
The Creative Districts program was first approved by the legislature in 2017. Washington has now certified 19 Creative Districts. In March 2019, ArtsWA received the Innovation in Economic Development Award from the Washington Economic Development Association (WEDA).
