Burien becomes Washington's newest Creative District

Burien is named Washington's newest Creative District

Following a unanimous vote by the ArtsWA Board of Commissioners on August 8, Burien is now Washington’s newest Certified Creative District.

It becomes the thirteenth city statewide to earn this coveted designation, which spotlights and supports Washington’s hubs of innovation and creativity. The city is home to the Burien Fiesta, Arts-a-Glow, the Burien Film Festival, and more.

"Burien is bursting with creative activity,” said Karen Hanan, ArtsWA’s Executive Director. “Over these past few decades, we’ve all watched Burien’s evolution with tremendous excitement. Their Creative District certification comes right on time and couldn’t be more deserved.”

Hispanic Heritage Month

“Amor Sin Fronteras” (2019) by Miguel Maltos Gonzales, located at Virginia Grainger Elementary, Okanogan, WA.

September 15 to October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. These Hispanic and Latinx artists in Washington's State Art Collection and their artworks are a part of the fabric of our state’s vibrant communities and cultural identity.

13% of Washingtonians claim Hispanic heritage. In many areas of Central and Southeastern Washington, that rate is more than 30%. Many of our local art selection committees want art that reflects their communities. These artworks reflect our diverse heritage and perspectives—past, present, and future.
