Welcome to the New Torchbearer

We have composed a format that we hope will be easy and enjoyable to use. Issues will be published four times a year. Each of the auxiliary groups will be contacted by the committee to explore what they would like to showcase and to request articles and photos of interest to the community.

Dear Faithful:

It gives me great pleasure to see the re-launch of our beloved Torchbearer. Over the past ten years, the Torchbearer has undergone a number of transformations as technology has advanced. I wish to personally thank Anna Sarkisian, our former editor as well as Vardan Sargsyan who did the previous design and layout.

Our thanks to the current editorial staff and a special thanks to Linda Jevahirian for taking on the role of editor. She brings with her new enthusiasm and vigor as we move forward with a new design and presentation.

We look forward to hearing from you with your thoughts, ideas and feedback and we embark on this new chapter of the Torchbearer.

2025 ACYOA GENERAL ASSEMBLY & SPORTS WEEKEND

They welcomed close to 200 ACYOA Seniors and clergy from across the Eastern Diocese.

Our ACYOA Seniors hosted the 2025 ACYOA General Assembly and Sports Weekend that took place Friday, May 23, to Monday, May 26. They welcomed close to 200 ACYOA Seniors and clergy from across the Eastern Diocese. The weekend was a joyous reunion for many and the perfect opportunity to meet new people. The goal of the steering committee was to showcase our beautiful parish and community while providing an amazing experience for our young adults.

The Manoogian Manor is truly what its original name was intended for and more, a Michigan HOME for the Armenian aged.

If you are looking for a safe, comfortable, lively, engaging and compassionate home alternative for yourself or a loved one, look no further. Situated in Livonia, Michigan, on 10 acres of lush gardens, shady trees, and a bubbling fountain sits the Michigan Home for the Armenian Aged or The Manoogian Manor. Outside, there are walking paths, comfortable benches and a beautiful courtyard. It is here where residents gather to enjoy outdoor concerts, painting, lectures, and gardening. Residents who require wheelchairs or walkers are accommodated by experienced staff who have been working here for as long as 25 to 40 years!

Armenian American Veterans' Building

Community Participation for the Future

We grew up in this building. Let’s preserve it for now and for the future.

Our Armenian American Veterans' Building is a total community center, serving our greater Armenian Community. Generations of our Detroit Metro area Armenian Community have attended sporting events, played cards and tavloo, participated in Tuesday Lunch Club, rehearsal dinners, day camp, birthday and graduation parties, social get togethers and even church! All because a group of Armenian American Veterans returning from giving service to our country and the world, believed that they could and should do more. So, the idea of a community center was born on Oakman Boulevard.

World Medical Relief: A Three Day Miracle

My story begins with our own Fr. Aren Jebejian.

St. John Armenia Church (SJAC) has partnered with our Southfield neighbor, World Medical Relief (WMR) for many years. SJAC has a regular WMR Volunteer scheduled on Saturdays, every two months throughout the year. On these WMR Volunteer Days, folks from our community gather to sort, medical goods and supplies that will be shipped to needy people in countries throughout the world. Last year over 60 shipments were made to help needy people in so many ways, we will never know the full extent.

Today I'd like to share a very personal example of what WMR does.

A Partnership Between St. John Armenian Church and Motor City Mitten Mission

St. John has contributed over 8,000 meals.

Motor City Mitten Mission is a nonprofit 501c3 charity established by Gail Marlos in 2018 to help feed, clothe and facilitate living in housing and provide basic social services for the homeless in the tri-county areas. Our teams go out every day, rain, shine, snow, sleet and even on holidays bringing food, drink and clothing to the needy!
