2025 Legislative Update

Summary


On Monday, January 27, 2025, the Florida Legislature convened for Special Session A, initiated by Governor DeSantis, to address several policy initiatives. After overriding a few budget line-item vetoes and hearing remarks from the presiding officers, both chambers adjourned Special Session A Sine Die Monday morning.


Following the adjournment, Speaker Perez and President Albritton called for Special Session B, limiting the scope to immigration. The legislature passed its version of the immigration bill on Wednesday, January 26. As a result of the special session, many scheduled interim meetings were canceled.

Congressional Districts 1 & 6 Primary Elections

State Senator Randy Fine

State CFO Jimmy Patronis and State Senator Randy Fine are one step closer to being elected to Congress after winning their primary elections. The seats for the Florida Congressional Districts 1 and 6 were vacated shortly after the General Election due to presidential appointments. The Special Election is set for April 1, 2025.

According to several sources, Governor DeSantis may appoint Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez as the next President of Florida International University. If this occurs, the Governor would be required to appoint a replacement for Lt. Governor. Stay tuned for more information as events unfold.
