Summary

On August 12, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed State Senator Jay Collins as Florida’s new Lieutenant Governor, replacing Jeanette Nuñez, who left the post to become President of Florida International University. Collins, a former Green Beret and Purple Heart recipient, took the oath of office during a ceremony at the Green Beret Association meeting in Tampa. 

He brings a distinguished record of public service, championing legislation to support veterans, strengthen disaster preparedness, and expand family programs such as Hope Florida. The FOMA congratulates Lieutenant Governor Collins and wishes him success in his new role. A special election will fill the Senate seat he vacates.

Interim committees for the 2026 Legislative Session are just around the corner as lawmakers, policy analysts, and others begin preparing their legislative priorities for 2026. Slated to start the week of October 6, 2025, the interim committee meetings will run intermittently through the week of December 8, 2025, in preparation for the convening of the Regular Session on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

  • November 3–7, 2025
  • November 17–21, 2025
  • December 1–5, 2025
  • December 8–12, 2025


Special Election News

As the Florida Legislature prepares for the 2026 Regular Session, several special elections remain to fill vacancies in both the House and Senate. These contests will help determine legislative representation in the upcoming session.


Key Remaining Election Dates:

  • September 2, 2025General Elections for House District 40 and Senate District 15
  • September 30, 2025Primaries for House District 90 and Senate District 11
  • December 9, 2025General Elections for House District 90 and Senate District 11


Of note, Dr. Ralph Massullo, a physician and former state representative, is running for Senate District 11. Announcing his candidacy early, Dr. Massullo has received the endorsement of Governor Ron DeSantis.
