TOP STORY

Unlocking the Grid with Integrated, Data-Driven Solutions

For decades, transmission expansion has relied on a binary choice: build new lines or operate within the constraints of aging infrastructure - an approach that is increasingly misaligned with today’s rapid load growth and permitting challenges. A new article from T&D World, “Unlocking the Grid: How Advanced Conductors and Dynamic Line Rating Boost Capacity Without New Lines,” highlights a critical shift underway across the industry. Grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) - including Advanced Conductors, dynamic line rating, and distributed fiber optic sensing - are no longer being viewed as standalone solutions, but as complementary tools that, when integrated, can significantly expand transmission capacity using existing assets. Central to this evolution is CTC Global’s GridVista™ System, developed in collaboration with Google Cloud and Tapestry, which enables continuous, real-time visibility into line conditions. Together, these innovations are transforming transmission from a static, periodically assessed system into a dynamic, data-driven network - offering a faster, more scalable path to increasing grid capacity and reliability.

The Connector Question: Why Composite Core Conductors Demand a Different Approach

As utilities increasingly adopt advanced solutions like ACCC® Conductor to meet rising grid demands, attention is often focused on conductor performance - yet long-term reliability depends just as critically on how these conductors are connected. This article highlights why composite core designs require a fundamentally different approach to terminations and splices, moving beyond legacy compression methods to engineered systems that properly manage mechanical loads and thermal behavior. By emphasizing the importance of purpose-built connector technology and a fully integrated system design, CTC Global underscores a key industry shift: ensuring that every component, including often-overlooked hardware, is optimized to preserve performance and reliability over decades of service.

The End of the “Cheapest Conductor” Debate

As grid demands accelerate and infrastructure constraints intensify, the long-standing focus on minimizing conductor cost per foot is rapidly becoming obsolete. This article reframes transmission investment around what truly matters - delivered capacity, efficiency, and total system performance over decades of operation. It explains how legacy steel-core conductors, including ACSR and ACSS, often introduce hidden costs through higher losses, increased sag, and structural limitations, while advanced solutions like ACCC® Conductor fundamentally shift the equation by enabling greater capacity, lower losses, and improved reliability within existing infrastructure. Drawing on more than two decades of global deployment, CTC Global makes a compelling case that the industry must move beyond outdated cost metrics and focus instead on total lifecycle value - where the real economics of transmission are defined.

Google Cloud - Special Article in Power & Energy

A recent blog post from Google Cloud highlights a critical gap in today’s power grid: despite billions invested in modernization, transmission lines still operate with limited real-time visibility, forcing utilities to rely on conservative assumptions that constrain capacity, increase costs, and limit reliability. In response to growing demand from electrification and AI-driven loads, CTC Global, in collaboration with Google Cloud, introduces the GridVista™ System - a breakthrough approach that embeds fiber-optic sensing into Advanced Conductors and applies AI-driven analytics to deliver continuous, high-resolution insight across the entire line. By transforming transmission infrastructure into intelligent, data-rich assets, the GridVista™ System enables dynamic line ratings, predictive maintenance, and more precise, real-time operations - helping utilities improve safety, increase capacity, and unlock the full potential of existing grid infrastructure.

Azito–Boulay 400 kV Transmission Line in Abidjan, Ivory Coast

The Azito–Boulay 400 kV Transmission Line in Abidjan, Ivory Coast represents a significant milestone in the country’s power infrastructure development, marking the completion of its first Extra High Voltage (EHV) 400 kV corridor. Developed to address rising electricity demand across Abidjan and surrounding load centers, the project was designed to substantially increase power transfer capability while enhancing overall grid efficiency and reliability. The 36 km installation utilizes ACCC ULS Monte Carlo Conductor in a 400 kV triple-bundle configuration with overhead earth wires - an optimized design that improves corona performance, reduces line reactance, and enables higher thermal capacity, making it well-suited for a backbone EHV application in a warm coastal environment.

Executed by Eiffage Energy Systems with conductor supply from APAR Industries Limited, the project also included a technically demanding ~1,600-meter multi-span approach requiring 20 individual conductor pulls. This installation demonstrates the practical advantages of Advanced Conductor technology in overcoming both electrical and mechanical challenges, delivering increased capacity with lower line losses and improved long-term reliability. As such, the Azito–Boulay line establishes a strong precedent for future EHV transmission development across the region.

RECENT REPORTS

Unlocking the Grid: Addressing Transmission Constraints in Illinois and Virginia

A new analysis from Natural Resources Defense Council highlights how transmission constraints - not generation shortages - are becoming the primary barrier to meeting rising electricity demand across the PJM Interconnection. With reliability risks emerging as early as 2027 and consumers already facing higher costs, the report finds that in Illinois and Virginia alone, 13 GW of new (mostly clean) generation is unable to connect to the grid, while another 8 GW faces significant delays; across PJM, 26 GW is blocked and nearly 12 GW delayed. The findings make clear that strategic transmission upgrades are essential to unlocking lower-cost, clean energy, improving reliability, and ensuring that investments in new generation can actually deliver power to the grid.
