With Senators Manchin and Barrasso leading the session, Secretary Granholm highlighted the budget's emphasis on upgrading and expanding the grid, promoting microgrids for local resilience, and utilizing grid-enhancing technologies like Advanced Conductors. The hearing underscored the importance of transmission infrastructure in enhancing grid resilience and meeting evolving energy needs, with a focus on wise investment and cost-effective solutions. | | | ACORE Coalition Urges Robust Funding for Transmission in FY 2025 Budget | A coalition of over 40 national and regional organizations and companies, led by the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), has issued a joint letter urging Congress for robust funding in the Department of Energy's Fiscal Year 2025 budget. Emphasizing the urgent need to upgrade and expand the nation's transmission network, especially amid the first significant surge in electricity demand in two decades, the coalition underscores the importance of modernizing infrastructure to meet evolving energy needs. | | |
DOE Implements Federal Permitting Reform to Expedite Transmission Infrastructure Development
| The Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled a new rule aimed at streamlining the permitting process for onshore electric transmission facilities. The Coordinated Interagency Transmission Authorizations and Permits (CITAP) Program, established under the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, aims to bolster coordination among Federal agencies while ensuring robust engagement with Tribes, states, local communities, and other stakeholders. | | | DOE Releases New Innovative Grid Deployment Liftoff Plan | The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released its "Innovative Grid Deployment" Liftoff Report, aiming to accelerate the adoption of advanced grid technologies and applications. This initiative, part of the Pathways to Commercial Liftoff program, aligns with the nation's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The report highlights the urgency of deploying underutilized grid technologies like Advanced Conductors to meet growing demand, enhance reliability, and integrate clean energy resources. | | | ACCC® Conductor Revolutionizes Bangladesh's Southwest Transmission Grid Expansion Project | In a significant stride towards bolstering Bangladesh's power sector, the Southwest Transmission Grid Expansion Project has embarked on a transformative journey with the selection of ACCC® Conductor. Endorsed by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), this initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and accelerate progress towards the government's ambitious goal of providing electricity for all. | | | NorthWestern Energy Installs ACCC® Conductor in Montana | For more than 100 years, NorthWestern Energy has been committed to delivering safe, reliable, and innovative energy solutions. Represented were professionals from BGE, Pepco / Atlantic City Electric, SRP, Constellation and PSEG and PECO. | | RECENTLY PUBLISHED REPORTS | | | Grid Lab Releases Report on Reconductoring with Advanced Conductors | Despite ample renewable energy potential, grid expansion has been sluggish, resulting in over 2 TW of untapped generation and storage assets in interconnection queues. To address this challenge, the Energy Innovation Policy & Technology LLC and Grid Lab released a report advocating for reconductoring with advanced conductors as a near-term solution to bolster transmission capacity. The reports provide insights into the costs, capacity enhancements, and transmission requirements associated with reconductoring, highlighting its potential to support the realization of clean energy objectives by 2035. | | | Idaho National Laboratory Reports on Advanced Conductor Use in the U.S. | Transmission capacity expansions must accelerate from historical rates if current decarbonization timeframes are to be met. Despite this need, this study found that capacity expansion rates have actually slowed in recent years. Many factors are responsible for this trend, ranging from permitting delays, to increasing land prices, to supply chain bottlenecks. This report explores trends in the use of Advanced Conductors to increase the capacity of the existing grid. | | | CurrENT Europe Publishes Tech Recommendations FOR DSO’s | CurrENT, the voice of innovative grid technologies in Europe, released its first edition of ‘Recommendations for DSO project deployments’ – a first-of-its-kind handbook for the deployment of innovative grid technologies at the DSO level. In this first edition, CurrENT covers some key technologies that can make a difference at the DSO level, including Digital Twin technologies, Advanced Conductors, Dynamic Line Rating, Monitoring Sensors, and Modular Power Flow Control. | | | World Resources Institute "Getting the Most out of Existing and New Advanced Transmission Technologies" | WRI presents advanced transmission solutions, including grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) and high-performance conductors. The webinar covers the mechanics and purpose of these technologies and feature expertise from regulators and subject matter experts. The panelists, including FERC Commissioner Allison Clements, discuss transmission capacity expansion needs, incentives, and how local governments can become involved in transmission-related conversations. | | | Energy Institute at Haas Updates “Accelerating Transmission Expansion by Using Advanced Conductors in Existing Right-of-Way” | First released in November 2023, The Energy Institute at Haas Berkley and Grid Lab paper (updated February 2024) presents tremendous insight into the vast benefits of updating the existing grid using advanced conductors.
