America's electric grid is entering a period of unprecedented demand growth driven by artificial intelligence, data centers, advanced manufacturing, electrification, and economic expansion. While new transmission development remains essential, many utilities are discovering that one of the largest untapped energy resources may already exist within the infrastructure they own today. The challenge facing the industry is not simply determining what needs to be built, but how quickly additional capacity can be delivered to support growing demand while maintaining reliability, affordability, and resilience.
As a result, increasing attention is being focused on technologies and strategies that unlock more value from existing transmission assets. | | Iraq Energizes First 400 kV ACCC® Conductor Reconductoring Project on 136 km Transmission Line | | |
Iraq recently energized its first 400 kV ACCC® Conductor reconductoring project, marking a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing grid modernization efforts. The 136-kilometer Rumaila IPP–South Nasiriyah transmission line was upgraded using ACCC® Galveston Conductor, more than doubling the line’s power transfer capability while reducing transmission losses and lowering mechanical loading on existing towers and infrastructure. Completed under the leadership of Iraq’s General Company for Electric Power Transmission in the Southern Region, the project demonstrates how advanced reconductoring can unlock substantial new capacity within existing transmission corridors.
The project is expected to improve power delivery across southern Iraq, strengthen grid reliability, and support future load growth without the need for new transmission rights-of-way. By combining higher capacity, lower losses, reduced sag, and improved structural performance, the upgrade highlights the value of Advanced Conductor technology as a fast and practical solution to transmission constraints. As Iraq’s first and longest 400 kV ACCC® Conductor installation, the project establishes a new benchmark for transmission modernization and reinforces the growing role of advanced reconductoring in meeting global grid expansion challenges.
| | | | World’s First ACCC® Conductor Installation Using Wedge Clamps Completed in Germany | |
Amprion has successfully completed the world’s first routine installation of ACCC® Conductor using wedge-clamp dead-end fittings as part of its Bauler grid reinforcement project in Germany’s Südeifel region. The project supports a key European interconnection initiative and marks an important milestone in Advanced Conductor deployment.
Developed through a collaboration between CTC Global, RIBE, and Lamifil, the ACCC® Conductor-compatible wedge-clamp solution enables faster, easier installation with less equipment required at height while providing excellent electrical performance. Following extensive testing, Amprion adopted the technology for this and future ACCC® Conductor Projects, with additional utilities across Central Europe now specifying wedge clamps for Advanced Conductor installations. The successful deployment represents another step forward in accelerating grid modernization, increasing capacity on existing infrastructure, and helping utilities meet growing energy demands more efficiently.
