Speed to Power: Why Advanced Conductors Offer the Most Impactful Transmission Solution

America’s electric grid is facing a new era of urgency. AI-driven data centers, electrification, industrial reshoring, renewable integration, and rising reliability concerns are dramatically increasing the need for transmission capacity across the United States. Yet traditional greenfield transmission projects often require a decade or more to permit and construct. Recent studies from the U.S. Department of Energy make clear that the nation must rapidly expand transmission infrastructure to support economic growth, resilience, and grid reliability. The challenge is no longer simply generating enough electricity - it is whether enough transmission capacity can be deployed fast enough to move power where and when it is needed.

A recent Berkeley Haas study suggests that reconductoring existing transmission corridors with advanced composite-core conductors may represent one of the fastest and most practical opportunities available to accelerate grid expansion. By leveraging existing rights-of-way, utilities can substantially increase transmission capacity while reducing many of the permitting and siting challenges associated with entirely new corridors. In our latest blog post, we explore why “Speed to Power” is becoming one of the defining challenges facing the transmission industry - and why Advanced Conductors are increasingly emerging as part of the solution.

TRENDING NEWS

The Grid Capacity Crisis Is Forcing a New Transmission Strategy

As electricity demand surges from AI, data centers, electrification, and domestic manufacturing growth, the conversation around transmission modernization is rapidly shifting from politics to practicality. In this timely article, CTC Global explores why America’s aging transmission infrastructure must move beyond policy debate and toward scalable, real-world solutions that can be deployed quickly and cost-effectively. The piece highlights how advanced reconductoring technologies like ACCC® Conductor are helping utilities unlock dramatically greater transmission capacity using existing rights-of-way - improving reliability, reducing congestion, and accelerating grid modernization at a time when the need for affordable, resilient electric infrastructure has never been greater.

The Grid Modernization Opportunity

A growing number of industry leaders now recognize that transmission modernization is no longer simply a long-term planning exercise - it is an immediate operational and economic necessity. This article explores how evolving transmission pricing reform and grid policy discussions are creating new momentum for the deployment of advanced transmission technologies that can rapidly expand grid capacity while helping control costs and improve reliability. From Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) to high-capacity Advanced Conductors like ACCC® Conductor, the piece highlights how utilities can unlock significantly greater performance from existing infrastructure to support rising demand driven by AI, data centers, electrification, and industrial growth.

Adapting to a Fast-Changing Power System

The electric power industry is entering a new era shaped by rising complexity, uncertainty, and rapidly changing operating conditions. Growing demand from AI, data centers, electrification, distributed energy resources, and renewable integration is transforming the grid into a more dynamic and decentralized system, challenging traditional utility planning assumptions. In this featured article, we explore why grid resilience increasingly depends on flexibility, visibility, and high-performance infrastructure, and how transmission modernization technologies like ACCC® Conductor can help utilities increase capacity, reduce congestion, improve reliability, and adapt more quickly to an increasingly uncertain energy future.

How the ACCC InfoCore® System Helps Utilities Verify ACCC® Conductor Integrity

For utilities deploying Advanced Conductors, confidence in long-term conductor integrity is just as important as ampacity, efficiency, and sag performance. This new article explains how the ACCC InfoCore® System provides utilities with a fast, field-proven method for verifying the structural integrity of ACCC® Conductors during installation - and even years after the line has been energized. The article explores how embedded optical fiber technology, cloud-based documentation, and real-world validation testing are helping utilities replace uncertainty with documented engineering confidence as they modernize the grid and expand transmission capacity.

PLN Expands Grid Capacity in West Java with ACCC® Conductor

Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) recently completed the 150 kV Cikande New – Cikande reconductoring project in West Java using CTC Global’s ACCC® Hamburg conductor to increase transmission capacity and improve grid performance within an existing transmission corridor. The double-circuit project utilized approximately 56 kilometers of ACCC® Conductor manufactured locally by PT. KMI Wire and Cable Tbk., allowing PLN to significantly uprate the line while minimizing the need for major structural modifications or new right-of-way acquisition. Engineered by PLN PUSMAPRO and installed by PT. Indo Karya Elektrik Mandiri, the project demonstrates how Advanced Conductors can help utilities quickly and cost-effectively expand transmission capacity to support growing electricity demand.

The project also incorporated CTC Global’s ACCC InfoCore® System to verify composite core integrity before, during, and after installation, providing an additional layer of quality assurance and long-term asset documentation through cloud-based data storage. Supported by experienced installation crews, specialized stringing equipment, and local manufacturing capabilities, the project reflects the growing adoption of Advanced Conductor technologies across Southeast Asia as utilities seek faster, more efficient ways to modernize existing transmission infrastructure.
