Legislative Updates and Alerts

Proposed framework for an Automated Commercial Motor Vehicle (ACMV) Pilot Program

In 2016, Ontario introduced O. Reg. 306/15, Pilot Project - Automated Vehicles, enabling the testing of non-commercial Automated Vehicles (AVs) such as passenger vehicles, light-duty delivery trucks/vans, and small shuttles. As highly automated driving technologies continue to advance, the ministry has successfully collaborated with AV technology companies on pilot projects to test light-duty vehicles.

Ontario is now proposing a framework for a 10-year Automated Commercial Motor Vehicle (ACMV) Pilot Program that may be implemented through a new regulation under the Highway Traffic Act. The pilot program would permit eligible participants to test specific ACMVs (i.e., trucks over 4,500 kg) on Ontario's roads, under defined conditions.

Comments on this framework are open until November 14.

CPWR hosts online presentation on mentorship in construction

The US-based Center for Construction Research and Training is hosting a webinar on the benefits and challenges of mentorship in the construction industry. Recently completed research by the University of Washington examined the use of mentorships to prolong the careers of women in the trades, as discussed briefly in our previous webinar, Strategies to Recruit and Retain Women in Construction. Based on lessons learned throughout this five-year project, the research team worked with the SMART International Union to publish a Best Practices Guide and a Mentor Handbook that can be used by others interested in cultivating mentor-mentee relationships in the trades for both women and men.

During this webinar, attendees will learn more about these new resources and how they can help you develop or improve a mentorship program within your union or construction company, and the role of mentorship in promoting social support, and psychological health, and safety, and well-being.

The webinar takes place November 19.
