Commissioner Shell proclaims October

as Pork Month in Kentucky


Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell, seated, is joined by members of the Kentucky Pork Producers Association and pork producers as he signs a proclamation declaring October as Pork Month in Kentucky. The sale of market hogs and pigs brought Kentucky farmers $154.51 million last year. Cracker Barrel restaurants, FiveStar convenience stores, and Dairy Queen restaurants in Kentucky and the surrounding region use Kentucky-raised pork for their sausage.

With more than 1,500 swine operations across the Commonwealth, Kentucky ranks among the top 20 states for total swine production. At the beginning of this year, Kentucky had approximately 475,000 total head of market hogs on feed, representing only a portion of more than 860,000 hogs and pigs Kentucky farmers sold at market last year.
