Eligible People in Contra Costa can Now Schedule Monkeypox (MPX) Vaccine Appointments Online
People at higher risk of exposure to monkeypox (MPX) can now schedule vaccination appointments online through Contra Costa Health.

To book an appointment, go online to mpxvaccine.cchealth.org

Previously, people in Contra Costa had to submit an appointment-request form to get on a waiting list for vaccines. Increased vaccine supply is allowing Contra Costa Health to now let community members directly schedule their own appointments without having to get on a waiting list.

MPX vaccinations will be offered at the COVID vaccine sites in Richmond and Concord; appointments are currently required, although they are planning for walk-in service as soon as vaccine supply increases. Contra Costa Health is also planning pop-up vaccination clinics with community partners serving the LGBTQ community in the near future. Private and community healthcare systems are starting to carry the vaccine, so people should check with their regular healthcare providers about getting vaccinated.

The MPX vaccine, Jynneos, can be given preventatively or up to four days after exposure to the virus. After symptoms appear, it’s too late and the vaccine won’t help. Antiviral treatment known as TPOXX may be available to people sick with MPX; people should check with their regular providers about treatment options.

Overall vaccine supply remains limited. Contra Costa Health is prioritizing vaccination for people at higher risk of exposure or infection to MPX, such as close contacts of known cases, sex workers and gay, bisexual, and other men or trans people who have had more than one sexual partner in the past 14 days.

While anyone can get MPX, not everyone is at equal risk. The large majority of current cases are among men who identify as gay or bisexual, particularly men who recently have had sex with multiple men. The virus primarily spreads through skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact.

The Bay Area has the highest MPX case rate [cdph.ca.gov] in the state. As of August 16, there have been 40 confirmed or probable MPX cases in Contra Costa.

Most people recover from the illness at home, although the rash or sores can be very painful. There have been no deaths in California or the United States from MPX this year.

MPX belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox. Infected people develop rashes or sores that can look like pimples or blisters. Someone is contagious from the time symptoms appear until they no longer have symptoms and rashes have fully healed, a process that can take 2-4 weeks. Those infected with the virus should isolate at home while they’re contagious.

New COVID-19 Vaccine, Novavax, Now Available to Those Who Have Not Previously Been Vaccinated
County-run vaccination clinics in Contra Costa are now offering the recently approved Novavax vaccine for adults who have yet to be immunized.
The Novavax vaccine is different from the Pfizer and Modern vaccines, which use mRNA technology to teach the body to fight against COVID-19. Novavax is a protein-based vaccine similar to others that have been used for decades, such as the hepatitis B and shingles vaccines.
Novavax requires two doses given at least three weeks apart. It has not been approved by the FDA for use as a booster, so it is only available to people ages 18+ who have never gotten a COVID-19 vaccine.
Unvaccinated people can request Novavax when they come to County clinics. To schedule a vaccination appointment, go online or call 833-829-2626.

Contra Costa County Pipeline Safety Information
Request For Input
The Alamo Improvement Association (AIA), along with the Pipeline Safety Trust (PST) and the Hazardous Materials Commission of Contra Costa County, are requesting your input to help improve pipeline safety and access to education and resources regarding pipeline safety in the County.

The AIA has been awarded a Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and is currently working on a project to gauge the level of interest in various types of content for a Contra Costa website devoted to pipeline safety.

This survey is being sent to potential users of such a website in order to gain feedback on this project and to help determine next steps moving forward. Your participation in the survey will be very beneficial in learning how a site such as the one being proposed could be as helpful as possible to a wide range of users.
