A note from the Editors - We have made two significant changes (hopefully improvements!) to The View, starting this week. First, we are now going to publish on Friday mornings instead of Thursdays. This will give us more time to proofread and polish the newsletter. Second, we have organized the content into sections to make it easier for you to find the content that's most relevant for you. We hope you like it! | |
"Riding Donkeys and Flipping Tables"
Sunday, April 13, 2025 - Palm Sunday
We rightfully think of Jesus as a wise, calm and serene, but in today's passage he gets a little rowdy. First he holds a demonstration of sorts, as he parades into Jerusalem humbly and on the back of a donkey. His disciples make such a fuss the religious authorities tell Jesus to quiet them down, but he says that if they were silent, even the stones would sing. Then he goes straight to the Temple and drives out the moneychangers and market vendors and shouts, "This is a house of prayer for all people, but you have made it a den of robbers!" Jesus was indeed wise and composed, but he was not timid or quiet either. He was a prophet, and prophets have a message. And even knowing it would cost him his life, Jesus paraded into Jerusalem to deliver his message of compassion and mercy, but also justice and inclusion. This is what disrupts and enrages the powerful -- both the Pharisees who do not like his religious message, and the Romans, who see him challenging their Empire.
First Scripture: Isaiah 56:6-7
Focus Scripture: Luke 19:29-40, 45-46

So much happening during Holy Week!
RSVP now for the Maundy Thursday Seder
This year’s Seder is April 17 at 6 p.m. in Covenant Hall. Like previous years, it mirrors the traditional Passover Seder, followed by a service of Tenebrae. The meal includes lamb or a vegetarian substitute. To order and prepare the proper amounts of food, RSVPs are greatly appreciated to Veronica at the church office by Monday, April 14 (earlier is better!). As this is a worship service of the church, there is no cost, but a donation to offset costs is always appreciated.
Easter Sunrise Service at 6 a.m.
This year we are reintroducing an Easter Sunrise Service. It will be held Sunday, April 20, at 6 a.m. in the Lower Garden of the church (we will be using the “stage” area). This will be a short, outdoor service commemorating the early morning hours when Mary Magdalene and others first encountered the Empty Tomb and Risen Christ. It’s also to welcome the sunrise on the holiest day of the year! There will be music, scripture and a (brief) reflection. Dress appropriately!

Thanks for wearing your name tag
Thanks to all who wear your name tags at church to help learn each other’s names. Remember, you do not have to be a church member to get a name tag. This is the process of getting a new or replacement name tag. Find a blue connection card on the backs of the pews. Print your name as you would like it to appear on the name tag. Check the box on the card to request a name tag. Put the card in the collection plate during the offering. On the first Sunday of the month, we will clip new name tags to the rack just inside the church doors.
You can also decorate your name tag on the first Sunday. You will find stickers to use in Covenant Hall after worship. We encourage you to include a pronoun sticker. This is also when you could move your name tag into a holder that can be used with a lanyard. Some people put their tag on the rack at church as they leave. Some take them to their car or home. In any case, others will appreciate it if you wear your name tag whenever you are at Redlands UCC.

The Easter Bunny needs your help!
We are in double need of Easter candy as there will be *2* egg hunts! The first will be on Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m.—noon, at the Eggstravaganza.
The second will be immediately following worship on Easter Sunday, April 20, around 11:30 a.m.
As is our tradition, the kids will hunt for empty plastic eggs, then exchange these for a generous bag of candy. (All the same size, no matter how many eggs they do (or do not) find!
Please bring your individually wrapped candy donation to the church kitchen before Saturday, April 19, so as not to stress out the Easter Bunny!

Odd Jobs Corner
Are you a handy person? The church often needs a little help with odd jobs. Some require a particular skill while others just need your time and energy! Check this space each week for an updated list:
- Clean scuff marks off walls
- Pick up and discard cement bricks around campus
If you'd like to volunteer to help your church community (and save some money in the budget!), please contact Veronica in the office.
P.S. Have you noticed something around the church that needs repair? Maintenance request forms are in a file box by the office door, if you see something that is broken or needs attention.

Environmental Justice message
[A] group of about 50 leaders from rural communities in eight states — mainly in the western U.S. and Alaska — [travelled to Washington, D.C. recently] to urge lawmakers to preserve funding for climate and environmental projects that is threatened by the Trump administration. Organized by a nonpartisan group called United Today, Stronger Tomorrow, the trip was part of a larger effort by cities, states and civil society groups to stop the administration from withholding investments Congress authorized under the country's first major climate policy, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
[Lenise] Peterman, the Republican mayor of Helper, Utah, says the federal funding is especially important in rural areas. "We don't have the tax base that a more urban environment has," she says. "So, when we get those infusions of cash to bring projects to fruition, to me, it has triple, quadruple the impact that it might have in a more urban setting."

Racial Justice reflection of the week
At the University of British Columbia, we believe excellence cannot be achieved without inclusion.
Intersectionality is a framework that describes how overlapping social identities relate to racism and oppression. It merges race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, religion, disability, and more, to create a more truthful and complex identity.
For example, a queer black woman may experience the world on the basis of her sexuality, gender, and race — a unique experience based on how those identities intersect in her life.

Celebrate RUCC's 50th Anniversary June 21 and 22, 2025
Seeking your memories and reflections!
It’s been an interesting time at RUCC for the last 50 years! Do you have a memory or digital photo you would like to share? It doesn’t matter WHEN it took place - 50, 25, 5 years ago, or even yesterday. If you do, write it out (no more than a paragraph) and send it to Kathie Blakley. If you have a digital photo to share, you can upload it to http://tinyurl.com/RUCCupload and let Kathie know the event, participants, and date, and include your name.
We’ll use some of these in several different ways- some as part of the church history book, some in a Memories collection, and some in various displays at the church. —Kathie Blakley, RUCC Church Historian

Rev. Joe's installation, May 4 at 4 p.m.
Rev. Joe may have been the pastor since July, but these installations often happen 3 months to a year after the official start date. It’s not just a celebration of the church and the new pastor – it’s about the work of the wider church in the area and the ties that bind us together. This is an opportunity for us to invite other churches and ministers and build relationships outside the “local church” context. The service will have the Conference Minister Rev. Rachael Pryor preaching, and Rev. Joe will preside over communion. We plan on some special music and a reception afterwards in Covenant Hall. Save the date!
