If you are the parent or guardian of a youth who will be entering 6th grade or higher this Fall, please attend a very important parents meeting with Pastor Joe.
Date: August 4
Time: noon

This meeting is crucial for the future direction of Youth Ministry at RUCC.
Please plan to attend even if you anticipate that your youth’s participation will be sporadic in the coming year: we can still use your valuable input as we plan the coming year!

Rev. Erin Beardemphl reflects on the Western Regional Youth Event
Sunday, August 5 ~ Holy Communion and Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
Before I arrived, the youth of the church went on a very special trip to the Western Regional Youth Event, chaperoned by Rev. Erin Beardemphl and Kathy McCool (check name with Erin) of First Congregational UCC of San Bernardino. Worship this Sunday will have them share some of their experiences. The youth will provide worship leadership, including assisting with communion, and Erin will share some pictures and reflections from the event. I will be doing the children's circle, and we will have some special music from Richard Steffen.
The theme of the WRYE was "Love > Fear" or Love is greater than fear, and uses one of my favorite pieces of scripture: 1 John 4:16b-21, which tells us those who abide in love, abide in God, and God in them. It also tells us that loving God means loving our siblings in Christ, and we love one another because Christ first loved us. I hope you can join us!

Caring for Kin - Help Angel's Closet
During August, we will be collecting for Angel's Closet, an organization that collects clothes and hygiene items for middle school and high school youth in the Redlands area. Some of their most needed items include new toiletries (full-size containers), underwear, and socks as well as new or gently used clothing appropriate for teens.

Are you missing something? - take a look at the Lost and Found box!
The Lost and Found box in Covenant Hall is filled to overflowing with a wide variety of items. Please stop by...maybe something there really belongs to you!
Special thanks to Fred Nicoloff for unpacking the box to make this photo possible, and for kindly putting everything back in the box afterward.

Rev. Joe Wants to Meet with You!
Rev. Joe wants to meet as many people from the church as he can in these first few months. He's open to invitations to coffee, lunch, or dinner or other gatherings, but there's also an opportunity to set up a 30-minute "Welcome Meeting" with him online using this link: https://calendly.com/jdzarro/30min. This is an informal meeting with no agenda other than to get to know each other better. The meetings can be in Rev. Joe's office at the church, or online via teams (or other video chat). He's also willing to talk on the phone. If the times don't work, or you would like to make other arrangements (like a home visit), just email Rev. Joe at joe@redlandsucc.org or call the church office at 909.793.3520.

Review RUCC on Facebook
We want to encourage visitors and increase our presence online with positive Facebook reviews. If you have a Facebook account, it’s not hard to leave a review:
- Open Facebook and go to the Redlands United Church of Christ page. This is our page visible to any Facebook user and the one someone new to the church will encounter. (RUCC has two Facebook pages. Do not go to the group page, RUCC Members and Friends.) If you cannot follow the link, use Facebook’s search feature and enter the name of our church.
-
There is a row of tabs across the page. Click the “Reviews” tab.
- You will see, Do You Recommend Redlands United Church of Christ? with choices yes or no. Click yes to recommend RUCC to others.
- If you want your recommendation to be included in our page's rating, set the audience to Public. Recommendations that are shared publicly are the only ones that factor into our rating. What you write about the church will show up in Feed, on your profile, and in search results.
- Write your recommendation of at least 25 characters. When you are done, click the button labelled Post and you are done.
If you are using a mobile device this QR code, viewed with your camera, will provide a link to the Reviews page for RUCC.

Racial Justice reflection of the week
Children with a family history of incarceration are more likely to be diagnosed with physical and mental health conditions than other kids.
“We will continue to have health care disparities and lead the world with poor health outcomes if we continue to lead in incarceration,” said Samantha Boch.

From the Environmental Justice Team
Let’s say you’re buying a plane ticket online, and you see a popup offering to sell you a carbon offset, which is basically a promise to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas in, or going into, the atmosphere. Maybe you’d be paying someone to protect a threatened forest or supporting a clean energy company. Sounds good, right? It would be an opportunity to reduce the impact of your purchase on climate change. Unfortunately, according to Barbara Haya, director of the Berkeley Carbon Trading Project, “Most offsets don't represent what they claim.” According to research, most carbon offsets overestimate their impact on greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, some have no effect at all.
Because most consumers aren’t in a position to judge the legitimacy of the carbon offsets being sold to them, Haya has this advice: “I would say if you were offered offset credits when you buy a plane ticket or whatever, don't buy that credit. If you're going to spend money, spend money on reducing your own emissions. And then if you want to do more than that, donate to a [climate] organization.”
