Super Shepherd Sunday, November 9-
"Finding New Life"
I live in two places these days as I serve RUCC in this transition time to a settled pastor…I have an apartment just a couple of minutes from church, and I rent a home in Glendale with my wife, Marlene. There are many similarities in the two places and some noticeable differences. What is striking to me is that both places feel like home - I am welcomed and cared for in this faith community - and in Glendale, I have a wife, friends, and a dog that also make our house a home. Our text for worship has Jesus setting a new context for the Sadducees by setting aside the law that has guided their religious practice and introducing God’s love and care as the standard of a faithful practice, as “home”. Come join us for worship this week as we consider what we might unplug in our value system and replace it with the God “love” standard.
First Reading: Bad Bunny
Scripture: Luke 20:27-38

Settled Pastor search update
We are nearing the end of our first round of video interviews. They have been full of insight and promise. We are excited to have good candidates and we’re learning a lot about the experiences, skills and pastoral qualities they offer. After the first round is completed, our task will be to discern which candidates we want to learn more about in a follow-up interview. We will keep you informed. Thanks for your continued support and prayers.

Christmas Craft Faire, November 15-16
The Christmas Craft Faire is just a few days away. Are you excited? The crafters are ready and waiting for you to stop by and say hi. You will recognize most of them from our church family. Thank you for our donations for the Book sale, Puzzle sale, and Christmas sale! Bring your homemade/purchased items for the Bake Sale to church during office hours during the week. We will need them by Friday, 11/14, 1:00-5:00 p.m. We can package them for you if you want. All proceeds from these four sales go to the Pastor's Fund/Youth Programs at the church. We can do good and have fun at the same time! And, yes, don't forget that YAPS will be holding a cat and dog adoption event both days of the faire. Help us spread the word.
Fellowship will be a bit different on 11/16. After picking up your sandwiches and chips, we will gently guide you to the Bake sale for dessert. See you soon!

Book Group Sunday, December 7
The RUCC Book Group will next meet on Sunday, Dec. 7, at noon in Founders Room, to discuss the book, Madame Sorel’s Lodger, by Tracy Wise. Judith Ashton will be the presenter.
This beautifully written, immersive novel would be enthralling even if you didn't know the identity of the "The Artist" (Van Gogh, but we're never told this directly). Wise evokes the setting of small village and invites the reader into the daily life of the reclusive painter who has arrived and whose presence will, as they say, change everything. The familiar signposts of Van Gogh's story are perfectly integrated into the narrative but yield unexpected new insights and some "ahas". Wise's cast is very intentional--each character comes vividly to life… This is a book you want on your shelf to dip into again and again. She takes a story about life we thought we knew and turns it into something deeply personal...which is also something universal. I can't wait for her next book.

RUCC Angel Tree Donations Sunday, November 16
The RUCC Angel Tree Donations will begin on Sunday, Nov. 16, and run for four Sundays until Dec. 7, which will be the last Sunday to donate. This year’s focus will be to help those faced with food insecurity during these difficult times. The recipients will be: Youth Hope, Redlands Family Services, and a pastor- designated family.
The process will be the same as the last few years:
1. People who want to donate can take an empty envelope off the Angel Tree in the Narthex. The envelope will have the above recipients already listed, and donors can designate who they wish to give to.
2. Then they fill out the envelope, put their money in (cash or checks to RUCC), and put them in the offering plate. Please do not put them back on the tree.
3. Envelopes will also be available at the scrip table if people have not had a chance to get them before, and can be turned in there.
4. Donations may also be made online through Realm.
5. Then money will be used to buy scrip food cards, which will be given to the designated groups at the end of the donation period (after Dec.7).
Please plan to give generously if you are able to do so.

Racial justice message
Reliance on federal power and the National Guard follows a playbook as old as the country itself. When faced with fear or perceived disorder, government leaders have repeatedly turned to law enforcement as the primary, and often sole response. Their target, however, has usually been the Black community. What’s happening now simply makes that old equation visible to everyone else.
American history traces this painful legacy back to slave patrols, groups of armed white men, often sanctioned by local governments, who were tasked with tracking, capturing, and punishing enslaved people in the American South. These patrols, which expanded in the 1700s, represented one of the earliest formalized systems of state-backed surveillance and control over Black bodies.

Environmental justice message
"To have dominion over all creation does not imply unrestrained exploitation. We are to treat creation as the creator would, not from our own selfish consumption but for the good of all creation."

RAIC Thanksgiving celebration, November 16
The Redlands Area Interfaith Council presents our annual Thanksgiving celebration November 16, 2025 4:00 p.m. First United Methodist Church.

Our faith teaches us that transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people are beloved children of God. Since January, this community has come under attack by our federal government. Banned from serving in the military and fired from positions in the federal government. Prohibited from playing on school sports teams. Cut off from lifesaving, gender-affirming care.
