Construction Underway!
| |
| |
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 11 for the future 143-room Skokie Homewood Suites and Conference Center on the northeast corner of Oakton Street and Niles Avenue in Downtown Skokie. Over 100 people joined Village officials at the event, including the hotel developer, construction team, Downtown merchants, Skokie residents and representatives of Skokie businesses and the Skokie Chamber of Commerce. Maverick Hospitality CEO Bob Habeeb kicked off the celebration followed by Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Gina Speckman. Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen (pictured) then welcomed the crowd and encouraged everyone to grab a shovel to be part of this transformational development that will serve as a key anchor for the Illinois Science + Technology Park (ISTP) and Downtown Skokie.

The Village and the hotel project team are committed to advancing sustainability measures for this development. Click here for details.
| | New Downtown Skokie and Hotel Parking Garage |
As part of the hotel project, the Village is bringing public parking to a centralized Downtown Skokie location. The first phase of the parking garage will provide 100 public parking spaces to serve Downtown Skokie businesses and 200 parking spaces for the hotel. Future plans for the garage include additional floors for future ISTP tenants. The alley north of the hotel will become a fully improved street known as Oakton Terrace. This image shows the location of the hotel directly north of the hotel/Oakton Terrace, with Warren Avenue leading to the parking garage entrance. An overview of the ISTP including the garage to the left/west of 8030 Lamon Avenue and north of the hotel appears below.

| | Zorro: The Musical at the North Shore Center | | | August is National Breastfeeding Month | | |
Breast/Chest feeding has several health benefits for both newborns and lactating parents who wish to breastfeed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that breast milk is the best nutritional option for babies who do not eat solid foods. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants are breastfed for at least six months and up to at least one year as a complement to other foods.
Please click here for more information on the benefits of breastfeeding and resources for Skokie residents regardless of ability to pay or insurance status.
| | New CDC COVID-19 Guidance | | |
On Thursday August 11, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new guidance relating to COVID-19. The new guidance acknowledges that although COVID-19 continues to circulate, high levels of vaccine- and infection-induced immunity, along with effective treatments and prevention tools, have reduced the risk of severe illness. This now allows the CDC to minimize public health interventions and reduce barriers to social, educational and economic activity. It remains important for individuals to know their risk, protect themselves with vaccines and take actions if exposed or if testing positive.
