Everyone is invited to Opening Weekend events with artists, curators, and performers!

Please join us for the exciting line-up of events for the Opening Weekend of Broken Boxes: A Decade of Art, Action, and Dialogue at Albuquerque Museum (September 7, 2024 – March 2, 2025). Curated by Ginger Dunnill and Josie Lopez, the exhibition features large-scale installation, sculpture, video, and a robust programming line-up celebrating the work and ideas of 23 artists who have contributed to Dunnill's Broken Boxes podcast.


The Broken Boxes exhibition amplifies the collective strength of contemporary artists. Each of the featured artists engages their own cultural experience and elevates activism within diverse communities.

Delve into artist India Sky’s live music score and movement performance based on her film The Life Cycle of Rainbows, a body of work inspired by the BaKongo Cosmogram’s influence and permutations within Afro-diasporic music and dance traditions, including underground disco, house, and ballroom culture.

CONVERSATION: Artists' Roundtable


Join exhibiting artists Tanya Aguiñiga, Jeremy Dennis, Amaryllis R. Flowers and Guadalupe Maravilla in conversation with Broken Boxes podcast hosts Ginger Dunnill and Cannupa Hanska Luger as they share about community building, solidarity and survival in the arts. Co-curator Josie Lopez will provide opening remarks and introductions.

CONCERT: Mato Wayuhi / The Tewa

Composer for the award-winning FX/Hulu series Reservation Dogs, Oglala Lakota musician, artist, and actor Mato Wayuhi will perform songs from his acclaimed 2O24 album, STANKFACE STANDING SOLDIER, a self-produced record which Forbes calls “a masterpiece that revolutionizes Indigenous music into a new era.” Albuquerque's own 3-piece Indigenous Midwest Emo band The Tewa will play an opening set.

WORKSHOP: LGBTQIA+ Inversions of Power

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are invited to a workshop of spiritualized martial arts focusing on inversions of power through artful martial theater and somatic intelligence. This is a participatory-movement-oriented workshop welcoming all bodies and all abilities, hosted by Zhenevere Sophia Dao, accompanied by vocalist Willa Roberts.This program is presented in partnership with SITE Santa Fe. Capacity is limited and registration is required.


FEE: $10 / Free for members of Albuquerque Museum & SITE Santa Fe.

No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
