Hello FIYC! Happy June! Hope you are all enjoying the boating season! This month we have some fun things planned, we have the Blessing of the Fleet in Gig Harbor the first weekend in June (June 5) and then we have the Bell Harbor Cruise the 4th weekend in June (June 24-26). FIYC will also be participating in the Gig Harbor Maritime Parade on the 4th of June in downtown Gig Harbor. Thank you to Bill Marcy for taking the lead on the parade! The parade starts at 10:00 AM and goes through downtown Gig Harbor along the waterfront! This is a time honored tradition that FIYC has participated in numerous times and this is the first parade in the harbor in 2 years! Please come and watch the FIYC Bridge Officers and spouses in the parade waving to the crowds...and we will be passing out candy too! :)
The end of April and the beginning of May was crazy busy but a very fun busy! I was honored to be able to represent FIYC at 2 events!
Seattle Opening Day 2022
First up was Opening Day at Seattle Yacht Club. I would like to thank Bill and Melanie Marcy for volunteering to be the parade boat this year and for hosting the Bridge for the parade. Bill is amazing to watch being at the helm in the staging area for the boat parade and he was able to get us right behind University of Washington Husky Band, GO DAWGS! Thank you to both the Marcys and Fleet Captain Todd Lohse for opening up your boats up as landing spots for the weekend. For dinner Friday night we were able to get the use of the Heritage Room at Seattle Yacht Club (Thank you Nancy!) and I invited Totem Yacht Club, Des Moines Yacht Club and Puget Sound Yacht Club to join us. It was a great night hanging around and talking with everyone. Even though the weather did not cooperate too much except for the boat parade, fun was still had by all! If you haven't seen the pictures and videos from our members that came up to watch, head over to the Fox Island Yacht Club Facebook group and take a look! The boat parade was so much fun!
South Sound Opening Day 2022
On the 14th of May was South Sound Opening Day hosted by Des Moines Yacht Club. They did an opening ceremony with Commodores of local Yacht Clubs and local leaders followed by dinner and dancing. The theme was "The class of 1975" and 50's themed attire was encouraged! It was a great time!
Commodore's Ball 2022
Lastly, I would to sincerely thank Immediate Past Commodore Jeff Hooker, First Mate Sandra Hooker, and all the members that helped with the Commodore's Ball. It was truly an amazing night and fun was had by all that attended and that band....WOW!!! They were so good!! I have a feeling we might see them again at a future club function :) My father does not normally dance but even he was out there cutting up a rug! :) THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! It was a night I will truly never forget! :)
Enjoy the month and see you all at the club!

May was a crazy month. The weather still won’t let go. Rhonda and I have been out in the yard, because it’s Spring so we are going through the motions - weeding, a few new plants, fertilizing and so forth because we’re supposed to do this in the Spring. But, I can tell you my heart is not in it and if truth be told, Rhonda is not there yet either.

We’ve been doing some work on the boat so we can be ready for the 2022 boating season, whenever that is going to show up. I think I can count on one hand the number of warm sunny days we’ve had.
Opening Day
Opening Day up in Seattle was a phenomenal experience (our first time) and if you haven’t been, you should go. Over 20 Yacht Clubs were there, each with some kind of open bar set up on Friday- you do want to be there on Friday. A real good time. Bridget’s “slow gin fizzes” were the best of all. Thanks to Todd and Bill Marcy we all had a place to land, get out of the weather, and enjoy some refreshments throughout the day on Friday. We were supposed to be there with our boat but we had some last minute mechanical problems and wound up driving up and staying overnight in a hotel. The Crew Races on Saturday were exciting as was the Yacht Club Boat Parade. We don’t have an official count of the number of crews but it looked to be well over 30. They seemed to be from all over the place. It was a great weekend and you should put it on your calendar for next year. Just saying.
Looking Ahead
So…June! We will be a participant, once again, in the Gig Harbor Maritime Parade thanks to the groundwork and planning of Bill Marcy. Our Friday night BBQ will be held on the 17th and it will double as our first planning session for our Cruise and Events scheduling for 2023. It appears that we may be living a somewhat revised lifestyle coming out of Covid and our scheduling of events for 2023 probably should reflect that. So many of our members seem to be trying to catch up on all the trips, vacations, and family meet-ups that did not get done over the past couple of years. If you have any strong feelings about our Cruise and Events schedule, please try to attend.
Our Father's Day breakfast happens on June 19 and is open to members as well as the public. Your Bridge will be doing the cooking so come on out and give us a try. You’ll see a notice below with the details. We wrap up the month with a Cruise to Bell Harbor. We have our boat running like a top and we’re taking our daughter (one of them) AND our dog. Hope to see you there.

Maria and I have just returned from a transatlantic cruise beginning in New York City, with stops in the Azores (islands 300 miles off the coast of Portugal which are a Portuguese protectorate), and multiple stops in Spain, Monaco, and Italy, culminating in our final stop in Rome. This cruise was initially scheduled two years ago, and was postponed twice due to covid.
| | |
The cruise itself was fantastic, but unfortunately Covid reared its ugly head as we disembarked from our ship for a planned three day visit in Rome. Unfortunately we tested positive for Covid, and were forced to extend our “vacation”, along with my sister and brother-in-law, for an additional week of quarantine. We arrived home this past Monday, and I can honestly say I’ve never been so happy to return to the US, despite our nine hours of jet lag.
Completion of Boat Storage Electrification
We have just completed a large capital improvement project for the Fox Island Yacht Club. We would like to recognize all of those individuals involved in this huge project. In particular, we would like to thank and recognize Dave Smith who was the team lead.
Recognition for Boat Parking Team
From Dave Smith
The update to the Electrification of the boat storage area has been planned for some time and with the all-volunteer and hardworking team, it was completed earlier than expected. We had been using under-sized power distribution for some time. The boat storage area brings in a sizable sum of revenue to the club with practically zero cost. For the continuation of revenue and safety of the club, it was time to upgrade the power delivery system.
The following list of very hardworking volunteers did an amazing job to ensure the safety and on-going serviceability for the renters. This team put in some very hard labor over several days during several work parties, and were able to minimize the loss of power inconvenience.
The Team
- Dan and Shannon Lane - Lane Electric
- Lance Ulsh - Ulsh Excavation
- Art Arpin
- Steve Eltrich (Steve worked during each of the work parties)
- Ed Engelhardt & Ed’s grandson, Elliott Gilchrist
- Joseph “Tuck” Leitzinger
- Don Lillegard (Worked multiple times—and did the install of electrical receptacles on east side of boat parking)
- Bill Pusztai
- David Smith, Team Leader
- Larry Woodley
Many, many thanks to the team for their expertise, hard work, and commitment to improving the club!
Plans for the Future
Lastly, with the help of the building and grounds committee, a preliminary 1/3/5/10 year plan for future FIYC growth and maintenance was submitted to the Board at the May meeting. Pending their review and modifications, I expect to have the updated plan available within the next month.

I think we can all agree that the weather has “rained on our parades” so to speak. It will get better!
April and May have been busy with the Daffodil Boat parade and Seattle Opening Day. We had great weather for TYC and then it all came crashing down at SYC. Wind, rain, cold and more wind, but that didn’t keep us down. As PNW boaters, in the spring, “the only constant in life is change”.

Swantown...
Speaking of change, we ended up canceling Swantown this year due to weather, fuel prices and low interest in the event. I hope to change that as we cruise through the summer. We want to increase participation at all of our events, and after all we are a yacht club, so we want to see more and more of you join in at our FIYC cruises and events. Also, our new Drive-In program is all set up and some cool things are planned for those of you who want to spend a day or two without bringing your boats.
Flotilla
May Flotilla: was postponed, but not canceled! Again, the weather and temperature forecast didn’t bode well for floating around on your inflatables like we have done in years past. My plan is to do a “short-notice” flotilla event in the near future. All are welcome.
Maritime Gig and Blessing of the Fleet
This weekend of fun events is just around the corner on June 4-5, in Gig Harbor. Just around the corner, literally. Anyone interested in rafting up for this event please email Todd so we can get a count and a couple anchor boats. If you can come for the day on a smaller boat, please do. If you drive down, someone can pick you up on the dinghy and get your to FIYC flotilla in the harbor.
Bell Harbor Cruise
The Bell Harbor Cruise is coming up on June 24-26. Details and sign-up information will be arriving in your email soon. The Cruise Captains are Todd & Heather Lohse “Lah Dee Dah”. Casey and Kristi Thigpen will be leading the drive-ins via Ferry to this event.
Point Hudson Cruise
The Point Hudson Cruise is scheduled for August 4-7.
UPDATE: we have an openings for 3 slips. If you’d like to bring your boat up please contact Todd AND the Point Hudson marina so we can keep a count of anything more becomes available.
